So this weekend I went with a Yellow base. Sepia wash and then yellow layer andnow it looks like I just dipped the model in mustard! going to try and post a picture spomehow but phone is in the graveyard right now and waiting to get a free upgrade so I don't know how to do that. Might go old school ad find my digital camera LOL

I am trying to get pics sorry.

I have already primed everyone black because I was going for a metalic Iron Knights and then changed my mind. If I paint over the black with white primer am I going to lose the detail of the recesses?

here is what the look like now. I like more of the one on the left. But the brush strokes are showing on the pads and still streaky. Also airbrush is out of the question.

And they are not finished I have the final touch up and clean up on both but this is just for getting an idea of where I am sitting.

Here's my effort:

My method:

1) White Spray Undercoat.

2) Two thin coats of Vallejo Gold Yellow (Yriel Yellow equivalent).

3) Wash with Vallejo Sepia Shade (Seraphim Sepia) into cracks and corners, but leave the large flat surfaces.

4) Edge Highlight with Flash Gitz Yellow.

I've never been the neatest of painters but this process seems to give me good results.

My biggest gripe with this technique is the need to go back and undercoat everything that isn't yellow with black, which is quite time consuming because if you get any black on the yellow you will never cover it up properly. I have tried doing things the other way around (black first, then yellow) but I found that the thin yellow coats would run onto the black, so you can't win!

Ahh yes I see the problem. You need to thin down the yellow paint more and use a flat brush and apply numerous very thin layers.

Second that - I would definitely start with a light brown or pinky-brown coat as a base and work the yellow in thin coats, painting in multiple directions to avoid streaking.  You will need 2-3 coats of yello to create a crisp look.  When shading try to focus solely on getting paint into the crevices

With water!  Seriously though look into getting a wet palette, it makes painting much easier.  I think I bought mine for like $5 or less at Michaels or Jo-ann Fabrics or A.C. Moore (I can't recall which) and I use paper towels as the sponge and baking parchment paper as the semi-permeable membrane.  Mine looks different but its the same general idea

I know some people often use foam also, but I go long stints without painting and find sometimes the inside of my wet palette gets a little moldy so I just stuck with paper towels.
