Inquistion help?

Space Wolves are my main, but I love the models from Witch Hunters and the Inquisition Codex.

So I am entertaining the idea of starting a new army for fun and as a kind of surprise since people are used to what I play, but I do not know where to begin.

So can anyone give me a crash course as it were and some insights and any advice would be appreciated.

Coteaz.  Always take Coteaz.  If there's one thing to take form Codex: Inquisition, it's him.

Inquisitors are cheap, and provide Divination and Servo Skulls.  Can also outfit them with CC genrades or TDA + Psycannon.

Henchmen are versatile.

Warriors are good cheap shooting with either Bolters or Storm Bolters.

DCA are beasts in CC.  Absolute Beasts.

Codex: Inquisition Priests are fun, thier Psychic Powers without being Psychic Powers are great.

Jokers can be useful for long range shooting, although expensive.

If you're attaching an Inquisitor to a squad, Plasma Cannon Servitors are nice choices.

Crusaders can give some durability to a squad with thier 3++ saves.

With Codex: Inquisition, you can abuse transports for 13+ Rhino/Chimera hulls, 6+ Land Raiders (or Valks) if you want to go to extremes.  But all this depends on which rules you use (like Dual FoC etc).

Edit: Are you thinking of running the Inquisition as Primary, or using them as allies to your Space Wolves?

Would be primary, an entire different army.

Generally, Henchmen units are fragile.  You'll need to consider wither swamping the board with them, or using Transports to provide some durability.

Or look to allies for scoring units.

With less than 2K points, you're limited to only three units and a max 36 minis.

You could also field a primary Inquisition army of only a single 25 point Inquisitor.  For giggles.

I strongly encourage people to write to FW asking if they have any plans for GKs. Last time I wrote, I got a resounding "nah". But who knows? If we bother them enough, they might give us something... It seems we got our nice codex, but then got cut off from everything (we, the mighty keepers of the stormraven have access to no variant - we're the only Astartes that are not Bros with the Knights - our GKGW are too cheap to pony up for Contemptor dreads - etc).

Eh, I more think of it as we were forged as a brand-new Chapter, so we don't have legacy gear from the Legions. We get the proven standard tech, plus the best cutting edge stuff from that era (hence we got the Raven first). We probably don't need boarding rams, because we usually teleport our units into position. Contemptors are probably out because they're rare enough anyway, and so few Knights become Dreads that GW saw no need to give us them (nothing wrong with the standard Mk IV chassis anyway, PsyDreads kick ass).

As for the new mini-Titans, again, we don't need them. Also, people forget that the Knight Orders are part of the Mechanicum, and we already have strong relationships with them for all sorts of forbidden tech. Dreadknights > Knight Titans anyway, if you think about it, Daemons don't die easily to conventional weapons, they require either psychic powers, fire or blunt force trauma. Hence why most of our weapons are either melee, flamey, or psychically charged.

Melta, Plasma and Storm Shields...
Henchmen and Red Hunters ;)

In all seriousness though, we're specialists. Daemons don't field many vehicles (Soulgrinders are literally it), nor do they have much in the way of physical armour (aside from Princes and Bloodthirsters). You have to defeat them using the old ways; fire, blade and sorcery.

I don't think we have an anti-tank problem (if anything psycannon is even better this edition, as Serpent Spam requires multiple shots not quality to defeat). I think we have more a long-range problem. Storm shields are kinda broken TBH. Henchmen however provide a perfect in-faction method of plugging the gaps in our army.

Depends on your philosophy.  Cadians or Catachans are fine, but they don't come modelled with bolters.  If you and your opponent are okay with 'counts as', then these models work fine.  If you're set on your acolytes physically having bolters, then your only real option are space marine scouts.

cheers

The fact that we're cut off from most FW goodies smile.png

Well only in tourneys (which ban Forge World most of the time anyway). In friendlies, most people won't care. Just paint them Knight colours and call it a day ;)

Sorry, dont mean to hijack but on the topic of Acolyte Henchmen with just Bolters - what's a decent model to use? Like Cadians? Or is there something better?

Scout Marines are best man, they come with all the necessary parts.

I'm confused as to why Coteaz often doesn't show up in HQ lists when people talk about GK strategy. It's like he doesn't exist. Same with battlescribe. Not an option. What gives?

Haters gonna hate I guess. He's hands down the best HQ in the game, never mind our codex.

Coteaz ?  Because some of us do not believe he will save the universe !!!  Seriously tho, he just doesn't suit some peoples playstyle, and while Coteaz has some great advantages, there are other, better, Inquisitor options.

Top kek. Name me another HQ in the game that does the work Coteaz does for 100pts. I'll save you time, there are none.

There are precisely two lists where you don't want Coteaz. The first is Draigowing, which got its wings clipped hard by 6th edition and xenos getting updated. The second is a Knightwing list, which goes Terminators all day erry day and thus would prefer TDA Inquisitors to Deepstrike in with. In any other list, he's solid gold.

Every single list that I have had sent to me so far from someone going to the LVO has had Coteaz in it. EVERY. SINGLE. LIST. When you can take him on top of your primary and ally, why would you not? You can cherry pick one of the best HQs in the game with no downside at all.

Edit: One of my largest peeves with the Grey Knights, and something that sucks fun from 40k in general for me, is that I have to try to justify *not* taking Coteaz in every single list I write.

Becuase he is that good, it's an auto include to take him.

And I don't want to.

Here's how I justify not having him in any list:

Inq. Nicole Pyykkonen and her um.. what is it now, condemnor boltgun needs to be in my list ;)

I have my custom Inquisitor with hellrifle

I have a custom Grey Knight Brother Captain with daemonhammer and psycannon modeled on a Stern figure

I have a custom Grey Knight Librarian modeled on an old school pewter Librarian with pewter arm bits and sculpted flames

I've got a Brotherhood Champion and 3rd Inquisitor with daemonblade in my modelling que.

I just don't own the model.

Ironically, that seems to help my brain a bit when you add it all up.  For his points though, Coteaz is plain awesome.  Thank goodness the new Codex: Inquisition lets me have scoring warbands without taking him.

Give in, GL. The Lord of Space and Time already owns your soul ;)

Eh, if it bothers you that much, count-as. Plenty of people do it with Eldrad etc.
