New Player Space Wolf Drop Pod Army Help

Hey mates. After taking a hiatus from Warhammer 40k for awhile now, I have decided to jump back into the game and after looking around I have decided to run a Space wolf Drop Pod Army. Reason for this is that I love the fluff and feel a Drop Pod Army brings, and although I eventually want to build an Army where I can run it out of both the Space Wolf Book and the Space Marine Codex (As Salamanders most likely), I want to focus on building up a Space Wolf Drop Pod list as it is considered the most effective on out there, Now saying that, I do have a number of questions on how to run it to it's full potential:

* Is it best to go Full Drop Pod or have some Long Fang units on the table, with Drop Pods coming in?

* Tempted to try out Logan Grimnar so I can run the Wolf Guard Spam Drop Pod list, as I can run 10x Wolf Guard w/Combi Weapons if I wanted to. Has anyone done this?

* Grey Hunters are an obvious great choice. Whats the best weapons to give them and what other equipment is necessary with them? Such as the Wolf Banner, Mark of Wulfen, etc.

* Rune Priests are very good so I will take one, however any other Characters worth taking in a SWDP List?

Appreciate all of the feedback you guys can give as I need as much knowledge and help you Veterans can give me on this. Thanks mates!

Full Drop Pod lists are not uncommon, as are hybrid lists. There's no reason you can't take Long Fangs in Drop Pods. Especially now with Snap Shots enabling you to fire them as soon as they arrive. A mix of Wolf Guard, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs and Dreadnoughts can be quite effective and Rune Priests make great support characters and force multipliers.

alrighty!!

fluff wise full drop pods can be fun, but long fangs are hard not to take, being so effective pointswise. ID say as long as you have 5 drop pods in your list (so your getting 3 in turn one) then see what points you have leftover.

Grimnar is lots of fun, but expensive compared to other marines characters..although if we get a new dex in the summer, his points may come down. Saying that, i find 5 man wolf guard squads in TDA more effective than 10 men in power armour. 10 combis tends to be overkill, and so wasted points. Remember also you can take 2 combi weapons on a wolf guard, which can be nice.

One other fun little trick is to stick logan grimnar in a drop pod, with a squad of long fangs armed with multimeltas, as he can give them relentless on turn one.

Grey hunters, i tend these days to go for the full ten men, a banner, wulfen and two special weapons of the same type. Special weapon wise...id start with an allcomers apporoach and have twin flamer, twin melta, twin plasma....then add another squad with special weapons as you see fit.

Rune priests for me fill one of two roles...you give them divination and sit them with long fangs, or give them jaws of the world wolf and fit them in a drop pod.

All good recommendations so far.  A few points from my foxhole:

1.  5 Pods is a good target number, to get 3 down on Turn 1.

2.  You can always assign Pods to Long Fangs, but just not embark in them.  Deploy Fangs in good terrain with acceptable fields of fire, and deploy the Pods empty (in the second wave, probably) with an attempt to use the Pods to disrupt enemy avenues of approach and fields of fire, or to isolate a specific enemy unit from the rest of his forces.

3.  Agree with mostly full Hunter packs, taking advantage of free second Special Weapon (double Meltas for anti-vehicle work, or double-Plasma for anti-Heavy Infantry); then add Power Axe (hidden, which is nice) and/or MotW for good close combat power, and always, always take the Wolf Standard (best use of 10 points in the game).  I also like to pay the extra points for the Plasma Pistol to increase shooting, since I'm more likely to get to see an effect from it coming out of a Pod.

4.  A unit of 4 Wolf Guard Terminators (with 5th in Power Armour, or acting as Pack Leader for Long Fangs, or elsewhere) escorting your Warlord in a Pod can also be effective.  Mix up the weapons to get best versatility.  Here is where a Wolf Priest with Preferred Enemy or a Rune Priest can pay off.  Put him in Runic Armour (never Terminator Armour), and he'll get extra benefits of that, while also also room for the 5th Wolf Guard (final guy in Power Armour) in the Pod.

That's enough for now.
