Well you could do Dark Ang-

Nah we don't want you anyway :P jk

The good thing about starting up is get betrayal and start a general feel for your army, then get one of the future books to pick what legion you want.

That's totally how I started. I had a Nightlords' force built with the vanilla marine list right up until the day FW put out Massacre. Then I got an awesome new Rite of War, sweet assault troops and a primarch of my very own ^_^

I'm basically in the same position.  I think I am going to wait until at least Extinction comes out to give me some more choices as far as Legions go.

Brother!  While the lists I have been writing will remain purely hypothetical until the release of Extinction, Dorn would still be proud of how industrious I have been in building troops (though my painting progress may get me a few hours in the pain glove).

Homicidal shock & awe assault infantry that can see in the dark and want to flay your face?

You mean, relentless infantry backed up by the biggest, meanest armour an astartes can, all the while brofisting the best toys the mechanicum has to offer?

I know that I have read it before, but can anyone direct me in the right direction to find what the orginal 18 legions were based off of?  I know that the Dark angels were based off Teutonic Knights, The Ultramarines off of the Roman Empire, and World Eaters off of the gladitorial revolution of Spartacus, but I cannot remember where I read it.

That's it I've made my decision......

I can feel the nails starting to itch!

I suggest looking into bits sites for Rampager bits. They look great when used on Veterans and whatnot... just lose the god awful heads.

just bought two sets up rampagers as well as rampager bits anddddd FW berzerker heads for my vets......The helmet on the left...using for my command squad and vets...those are WIP btw

30k list is a double edged sword. There's so much you can work with and want to do, and that's the problem :D you just want to add everything to your army but can't fit it in points wise haha

Half of the joy in 30k is theoryhammer.....

Perfect timely thread.  I've been drooling over all the HH models lately, trying to figure out which army to jump in to. Leaning towards Death Guard.

I only have the first HH book. I notice there are no HQ models that match anything in the book.  Only HQ model they've made is for a lesser hero-no primarch or anything, and the one they have a model for is, of course, in the second book. Since I'm new to this party, is that something they're likely to update (models that is), or are they just going to focus on new legions and I'm going to be primarch-less forever?

To hell with 'too many points". If you ain't building towards an Apocalypse sized army, you ain't tryin'. :P

Yeah it's a happening, but I lack the funds as a college student.

Good thing I live in a populated area surrounded by expensive organs-errrr I mean people....

There was something by word of mouth saying that non Black Library characters won't get models - you'll have to kit bash them yourself.

Special characters aren't that fantastic anyway when you can create your own crazy awesome praetor/centurion

They did the same with the Badab War books. I like it that way. I've seen some awesome conversions come of it.

Death Guard, good choice, and those bundles full of bolter marines and those command models, wonderful models for DG!

Yup, kit bash I'm afraid, though you have plenty of choice !  If in doubt, get models from other units/chapters that look good - I've an idea to convert the Standard Bearer from the MkIII command set for my Crysos Morturg model, that or one of the IH Immortal models.  The Praetor set is awesome enough with the command sets for plenty of scope.

On the B&C, basically what the fine fellows above me mentioned. 99 times out of 100, you'll get nothing but support and constructive criticism here.

The better question is, what's you local gaming community like, and how open are they to the concept of 30k? Having a few like-minded individuals playing and painting with you can make it even more fun.

Or, if you're in the buttcrack of Nowhere like myself, how motivated can you keep yourself through making your own fluff, conversions, etc?

I hear you, Heathens.  For the last 20+ years I have mostly been painting, modeling, and making my own fluff by lonesome.  Mostly because I tend to be the only one in my circle of friends who's into GW.  The one time it did get rough was about 2 years ago when I was living in a small Cree community of about 700 people up in northern Quebec in the middle of snowhere.  No hobby store and, worse, only internet a few hours of the week, and no readily accessible mailing address so no online ordering.  I'd stock up when I was down south to "keep me going".

I like the idea of 30k, and the minis are pretty awesome.  I've been thinking about picking some up to serve as my current marines' predecessors.  Could be fun.  I'll probably also pick up the FW HH books at some point too.  Based on what I hear they sound pretty awesomesauce.

I think people believe flint to solely be one of the VIIIth.

She's a lady version of me loyalty is it's own reward and every legion has something to offer and we take what we want from each legion

A person of shifting loyalties is an VIII Legion. msn-wink.gif
