Unintentional Batman
I was just watching The Thin Red Line (vastly superior movie than the overrated piece of cheese that is Private Ryan) again earlier today and the scene where Woody Harrelson blows his arse off with a grenade got me thinking. Do we have any notable deaths that have happened in completely meaningless and utterly unheroic ways in the Heresy yet? And who would be your #1 pick to get such a fate? :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287314-unheroic-deaths/ Share on other sites

depthcharge12
That one Ultramarine captain in KNF that gets dismembered then chained alive to the leg of a traitor titan Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287314-unheroic-deaths/#findComment-3604272 Share on other sites
Sanct
Erebus-- slipping in the shower he didn't slip, he purposely bent over (refering to his fight with Khârn in betrayer, I mean really - What did he think would happen?) Solomon Dementer's end ranks up there for meaningless but not unheroic Ostian, Serena and Vespasian left me with kitten mew 'why?' awfulawful
That Dark Angels chaplain, drawing a blank on his name. He was that other guy's cousin. Sorry, not near my books and also I am apparently stupid right now. Quixus
Hastur Sejanus, not the aforementioned Dark Angels Chaplain, but an unheroic death nonetheless. Unintentional Batman
Oh, good point about Sejanus :) His death had a storytelling reason, but the death itself was just what I was thinking about. Theredknight
The death of the poor ultramarine captain against angron in betrayer.. Sounded pretty painful if even Khârn thought it was brutal! Larkyn
Sheed Ranko. While it can be argued he went out with a bang, I still think his death was lame. [TA]Typher
Oh, good point about Sejanus His death had a storytelling reason, but the death itself was just what I was thinking about. Nemial Not only was it out of context for the story, but it was such a bland, unheroic death that it doesn't fit in the HH or his place in the previous books. At least Ferrus's death (although poorly written) was a catalyst for something larger, Nemial's did nothing. Veteran Sergeant
I actually like some of the abrupt, "pointless" deaths. That's war. And in the grim darkness of the far future, I heard that's the only thing happening. helterskelter
In Angel Exterminatus when all the EC go a bit more mental and start taking each other out in some kind of orgiastic frenzy. I know it kind of had a point, but there was nothing heroic about it, and just seemed like a "oh look half the EC are dead that'll make things easier" Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287314-unheroic-deaths/#findComment-3604561 Share on other sites

I like the fact that Loken is still alive, I just wish that a talented author from N. Ireland would write a book on Garro's teams adventures... But more on topic, if there were not random deaths of great characters, then it would not be a war series. No body lives forever and in war there are always casualties. Bolt shells and orbital bombardments do not discriminate... Inquisitor Kravin
Hastur Sejanus was first to come to mind - death not in combat was an ignoble end for such a hero.I thought that Nemiel's death was actually great. Whilst the story overall was underwhelming that was by far my favourite bit. A marine standing up to any primarch, especially his own, face to face is virtually unheard of and took serious dedication. It was a marine being forced to choose between his primarch and his emperor and I think the consequences of his decision vindicate his choice and show an ugly side to the Lion. Wade Garrett
Vendatha. There isn't much heroism in being impaled on a wooden spike as a catalyst for a Chaos rite.
