tylertt
Hello brothers, Got a quick question for you all regarding what color I should prime my Ultras.Should I prime them White or Black? And could you please give a reason to why I should go with either?Apologize if this is a silly question, but I am new to Ultras, and Marines in general as I am looking to start my first Marines soon. Thanks! Kaedes Nex
If you're using the new darker style of blue, I recommend grey, but black works fine and if you layer smartly you can even use the primer as shadows and shading. For the bright 2E style or if you're using a bright blue use white or grey. As for the reasoning, the color of the primer will have an affect on how the paint looks unless you put on enough layers. Black is harder to paint bright colors on top of since it's harder to cover a dark color with a light color, requiring you to put on some more layers. White is easier to cover and will make colors brighter since no darkness is showing through from underneath but it's less forgiving of mistakes. Make sure to thin down your paints so you don't accidentally cover up small details with thick paint when trying to cover the primer color. Psy-Crow
As a rule of thumb, I follow John Blanche. For armies he uses a black undercoat and for single figures he uses a white undercoat. its slightly quicker to leave a dark colour in the crevices when painting en masse than having to wash and relayer, or go back a blackline everything ( if this is your desired effect. Ultimately its about your painting style and the effect you want to achieve. Also, 3800 points of 'nids 85% painted? impressive. tylertt
So one more question to you brothers as I am growing eager to start my Marines. How far should I go with assembly of my Marines & Vehicles? I was planning on building everything but the weapons for the infantry. What is everyones advice for a first time painter of Marines? Also one other question, how should I thin down my paints? Just mixing water work well? If so, how much should I use? Thanks again brothers! UltraRich
I use black then base with macragge blue then drakenhof nightshade wash It gives a nice dark base to highlight off Re the minis I assemble the legs and body then paint the head, arms and weapons separately. A golden rule I work to is don't try and paint around corners. For thinning paints water is fine but medium is better. The problem is it's not cheap and I go through it like.... Err... Xenith
As per psycrowe. With marines, parts of them will be black or silver. if you prime black, you just paint the silver If you prime white, you have to paint them black first, then silver. Water I have a tiny bit of washing up liquid in my water. Helps to clean the brushes but also breaks the surface tension of the water so the paint flows a little better.
