Struggling in 6th edition

Hi all,

been playing the wolves for a couple of years now and i find that im losing a lot of games more so now than ever before.

I flit between a drop pod list using a storm eagle and a more land based approach.

I have mixed success with drop pods,depending on the army i play.

Im having real problems with Tau and Eldar, as im sure most people are, but im sure that im either having a longgggggg bad streak or were all suffering.

Any advice from some of those more experianced?

I have limited experience with the Tau and Eldar, but from those experiences I've found that any footslogging or firefights are destined for defeat against them. They, especially the tau, can bring so much fire power to bear against you that footslogging leads to the death of your army. Thus, I'd suggest using drop pods to land in Line of Sight blocking terrain, or at the least some rhinos to absorb one or two rounds of fire and get you part way across the board. Maybe even a Land Raider to spearhead an assault against them and buy some breathing room for your lesser engines. Failing that, outflank with Saga of the Hunter, use scouts, cavalry and bikes and generally attack from all sides at once.

The last time I faced down the a Tau player and an Eldar player, and they were allied together (lovely, I know dry.png ) and I won by using a drop pod of terminators in heavy terrain at the mid table to both absorb fire and bust tanks, and having three packs of grey hunters in rhinos race across the board. My fire support was two packs of Long Fangs bolstered by a Rune Priest with divination + chooser of the slain manning a quadgun, and supported with a Rifleman Dreadnought (2 twin-linked autocannons). My Dreadnought was a venerable, so I had a 2+ with rerolls to hit, 2+ to wound, no armor saves. My own ally was Chaos and spent most of the game dying to firepower from the Eldar. Regardless, the tactic of "rush forward and let the heavy guns kill the armor" worked well.

I don't know how to help you more without knowing what your land-based army is exactly and what your drop pod list consists of. Can you clarify?

my current drop pod list consist of;

4 x WG with combi plasma and combi melta, power fists and power weapons with Arjac rockfist in a drop pod.

5 x PA with combi meltas as the alpha strike in a drop pod

10 x grey hunters, standard, 2 x melta, MoW in a drop pod

10 x grey hunters, standard, 2 x plasma, MoW in a drop pod

10 x grey hunters, standard, 2 x plasma, MoW in a drop pod

5 x wolf scouts, 2 x plasma pistol, 1 x meltagun, behind enemy lines

storm eagle with 2 xTL lascannons,TLmulti-melta and vengence launchers.

Land based army is a variation of;

wolf lord riding with grey hunters

Rune priest

2 x 4 long fang units all with ML

three squads of Grey hunters, 1 in landraider two in rhinos.

5 x PA wolf guard with combi melta.

Hm... I like the Wolf Guard, though Arjac is a large investment he is a fun character to field. S10 hammer for the win! The only difference in the PA Wolf guard I'd like to see is 1-3 combi-plasmas. Tau and Eldar aren't known for high toughness or armor, and generally I only need two or three melta shots to bring down a tank. Its usually better in my experience to have a large amount of plasma shots than half as many melta shots.

I like the Grey Hunters and I field the same thing.

The wolf scouts are pretty solidly built. If you prefer, you could drop the plasma pistols and melta gun in favor of 5 sniper rifles and a Rocket Launcher. Then sit in difficult terrain and fire at anyone in your 36" range.

I can't judge the Storm Eagle or flyers in general since my only experience with them is in bringing them screaming from the skies to the uncaring earth.

As for your land-based army...

How is the wolf lord armed? TDA or RA, SS or BoR, etc? I assume he is with the Grey Hunters in the Land Raider, which I would recommend attaching a MultiMelta to. I can't tell you how many times I've blasted apart enemy armor after moving 12". Praise the Iron Wolf.

Do you use the psychic powers from the SW codex or the rulebook?

Are the wolf guard alone or attached to other units? If they are alone, do they have some transport? If they do not have transport, you need to reconsider. Meltas are shot ranged and footslogging them is only a good idea if everything else is footslogging... which is bad against Tau and Eldar.

All in all, I like both of your lists, and I have experience fielding similar things, with the exception of the Storm Eagle.
