sonofruss87
Since i first started buying my wolves I have used Army painter sprays and dips, for me I love the colour and the fact its quick and simple to use and can save a load of time which is handy seeing as i work 12hr shifts. For me the spray is quick and easy and goes on nicely and 8/10 times leaves a nice even coat on the model, sometimes it can go on thick and started obscuring detail this of course might be user error (I can be pretty special at times) but when it goes on smooth it looks damn amazing. Now i cant compare to the GW fang spray as I've never used it but for me now I wouldn't dream of using anything else (the four cans in my room is testament to that) I also use the plate metal spray for any large metal surfaces I need covering such as the inside of my newly acquired drop pod again like wolf grey this spray is pretty damn great. Onto the other army painter products I have which is wolf grey paint for the touch ups, again i cant fault this its a decent size and the colour is a perfect match for the primer (funny that...) and is great for touch ups. For the finishing touches and because as stated i don't have alot of time i use the dark tone dip and first off this smells amazing when you first open it up (not addicted i swear..) but anyway I prefer dipping my mini's except vehicles and again it seems like hit and miss sometimes, the latest models i have dipped have a nice sheen to them but it doesn't seem to have added much shading to the recessed areas not sure why but the model i have just dipped (5mins ago) has come out nice. Dipping is messy but simple but when it comes to tanks, dreads or now a drop pod you can layer it on using a brush which is also messy but allows to control where it goes etc but personally i prefer dipping. When the dip works the finished model looks simple amazing now I'm not the most amazing painter but the models i have dipped now look pretty nice so again a decent buy. So in short:- Spray 8/10 Paint 10/10 Dip 8/10 And they say the proof is in the pudding here is some of my models, again not the best painter in the world Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287510-my-thoughts-on-army-painter/ Share on other sites
mactire
Would agree with you on wolf grey spray and paint, I've used this on all my vehicles, however uniform grey hasn't been as successful for me. Any time i've used it, it has been too heavy and blocks the details, not sure if it's just the can but I did buy a second one so fingers crossed. I really think GW should release more of their base colours in spray form if they're anything like chaos black they would blow the rest away, best and most consistent product they have Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287510-my-thoughts-on-army-painter/#findComment-3608646 Share on other sites
Bartali
I don't like Army Painter sprays. Despite shaking the can vigorusly, spraying from the recommend distance and not spraying in extreme weather conditions, every now and then it'll come out to thick and clog the details Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287510-my-thoughts-on-army-painter/#findComment-3610675 Share on other sites
Kaedes Nex
You need to spray more lightly. Simple as that. Rustoleum has some high pressure cans with the same problem. Hellrender
Yeh, i had that in the beginning too, the paint is slightly ticker than the GW primers. But just spraying in bursts from side to side solves it. DO NOT ever spray in 1 long burst until 1 side is done. Spray lightly 2-3 times from side to side, release each time you reach a side. Then do a different side. This allows the first side to dry a bit so paint doesnt run or pool. What i do noticed with army painter is that it is a very smooth finish. This means that if you want to apply other paint over it, it has trouble sticking to it. Sometimes this dillutes the colour. This is why with light colours i prime lightly white from GW, and with other colours (like metal) black first. Makes painting afterwards slightly easier AND the army painter colours works out better. Gurth
Dipping is messyWhich is why I use a medium-sized brush instead, for the models I use this method on. (Not with Army Painter “dip” but with transparent wood paint from a hardware store. The principle is the same, though.) Kriegsmacht
I've been using Army Painter primer sprays for a while. Only had one problem with thickness on a miniature and it was my fault for lingering too long in one spot. It was a terminator and the primer looks caked on his left leg and torso. Other than that one hiccup I've had no problems with the primers I use. I sprayed a bunch of Grey Knight metal miniatures I had stored in a box with Plate Mail metal and they looks great to me so far. Also I like their dips. Used it on a couple beastmens and they look good so it'll be something i'll use often.
