I got to play at the ND Open, Quebec's largest tournament.  I was bringing a Grey KNight's army, so I felt this was the appropriate section to post this  ( Mods feel free to move it, I couldn't fin a bat-rep section )

Here's a review on my 6 games there, as well as a foreword on my strategy going in and an aftermath of the action.

It's spread in 5 posts, which should all link to the next.

Here are the other links for those wanting to skip ahead:

Thanks!

Game 1 was a seal matchup in an objective heavy mission. I feel for the other guy, bringing themed CSM to a tourney is asking for it.

Game 2 sounded like hell for the Ork player. DK's are just so mean against Orks, their only anti-2+ unit melts to DK's, which is what happened to him.

Game 3 sounded like dice never went your way. Biker Superfriends is a pain to deal with. Sometimes you just have that game and matchup, sorry man.

Game 4, I'm interested to know how you managed to avoid the Long Fangs all game. Did he only take heavy bolters/plasma cannons or something? 48" on lascannons or missile launchers should've meant some of your stuff was in range. Arjac is a pain, not surprised it took a lot to get rid of that guy. Sounds like your opponent didn't know what to do against your list, or just didn't bring the right tools. Re-match is definitely in order, Space Wolves are a strong matchup for us as they can punch down Strikes in melee, Rune Priests take away your psychic powers, and Long Fang lascannon kills DK's reliably (not to mention their plasma cannon ruins our infantry).

Game 5, you need to read the Necron codex thoroughly. Seems like some of his stuff caught you out because you weren't aware of what it could do. Necrons are again a strong matchup for us, good work making it a close game, shame you didn't get Turn 6 (that's quite rare in standard missions, usually mine to go to Turn 6).

Game 6 sounds really weird. I'd love to know what the list was, no shooting is bizarre for a 6th edition tourney. Daemons are kinda half the battle won though (we have so many advantages against them its not funny). How did you lose your DK btw? GUO are I2, so unless you rolled terrible on your to hit and wounds and then failed the force weapon check, I don't see how he survives to swing the Balesword.

Thanks for reading man!

Regarding your questions:

Game 4: He deployed all long fangs and priests far back in a corner, I deployed a gunline part of my army in the total opposite corner.  There was some terrain in the middle of the board, where I could hide some troops to claim the middle of the board.

Game 6:  Yeah, I missed my LD check for force weapon. His list was something like:  GUO, 3x Plague Bearers, 5 Drones, 3 SoulGrinders with the flame thing.  CSM allies:  Lord on bike with Axe/Claw, 5 Spawns, 10 cultists, 1 Maulerfiend.  Staying more than 20" away from the grinders in the first few turns meant he could not charge me and I got 1 down on assault cannons shot.

Ah I see. Just goes to show, deployment can make or break games. Good job exploiting his mistake.

Weird. On paper I'd say you should've curb-stomped that list, it has none of their problem units in it (Soulgrinders are annoying but DK's rip them in half). Better luck next time man.

The main reason I've been taking Banners in my lists is to garantee Force Weapon activation (specifically when dealing with Nids). Not having to worry about lighting it up, and getting those extra attacks, is well worth cost.

I think he was referring to his DK failing, which sadly Bro Banner can't help with. But yeah, I've been considering adding Bro Banners to my Terminators, they don't feel like they have enough attacks a lot of the time.

Take those Falcions!  You know you want it!

10 GKT, 9 NFF, 2 Psycannons, Brotherhood Banner (520).

For 36 Force Weapon attacks.  45 on the charge...

;)

52 Points a Terminator...  We're getting into Paladin costs now.

That being said, whole hog with 10 Paladin and an Apothecary is 775 points! O_O

Such a trap. Why not take hammers instead, and always gets wounds on target?

And one Riptide blast away from being a puddle of metal slop.

I just run combat squads of Terminators these days, and I'm finding hammers work best. Most things are faster, and S4/5 can fail you at times. Hammers ensure every hit you score is scary, plus you can kill anything (whereas halberds etc just scrape the paint on 2+ saves).

I to run combat squads quite a bit now, only running 10mans on units I want in CC, such as the aforementioned GKT and Ghosts with Banners. My other squads will have Psybolts instead, and deploy as Combat Squads unless Kill Points are in play.

I was the first Guy, brought my army mostly for fun and me and Skizo are friends, we had a great blast in that game :)

Fair enough. So long as you knew what you were getting into. I feel bad for CSM, they have maybe two builds at a competitive level, and anything that deviates too much from those builds gets stomped flat by even balanced lists. It's just like 4th and 5th edition all over again. I miss when 3rd edition CSM was the nightmare opponent, and even their balanced lists and themed Legion lists had enough special rules and cool tricks to ruin you day. It's still the only edition Thousand Sons were ever good...sigh.
