Dusted off the Space Wolves, with some success yesterday

So yesterday I attended a small tournament of about 10 people at my local game shop.  I decided to dust off my Space Wolves to throw a bit of a curve ball at my local group.

I hadn't had them on the field since Nov. and prior to that it had been, well quite awhile...

Sorry I didn't get any pictures yesterday, as I wasn't expecting to post a report of any kind as I was really just fooling around.

Here is the list I took:

Wolf Lord "Erik the Master of the Hunt" on a Thunder Wolf Mount, with a Frost Axe, Runic Armor, Storm Shield, 2 Fenrisian Wolves, Saga of the Bear

Iron Priest on a Thunder Wolf with Wolf Tooth Necklace, and 4x Cyber Wolves

Grey Hunters x5 with Meltagun, in a Razorback with twin-linked lascannon

Grey Hunters x10 with 2x plasmaguns, plasma pistol, power sword, Mark of the Wulfen, Standard, in a Rhino

Dreadnought with twin linked auto-cannon, power fist and stormbolter

Predator with twin-linked lascannon and heavy bolters sides

Long Fangs pack x6 with 5x Heavy Bolters

Thunder Wolf Cav x3 one with Thunder hammer, one with Storm Shield

Turned out to be a pretty good list,

Game 1 was against a Daemon army with Chaos Marine allies

He had roughly:

Daemon Prince

3x of those Daemon Defiler thingies from the Daemon Codex, forget what they are called (Soul Grinder maybe?)

2 large squads of Plague bearers

land raider with chaos lord and 4x Terminators

a large unit of cultists

hell drake

I feel like I'm forgetting something but that was roughly it.

Mission was kill points with a 12" deployment

I set up the majority of my army on my right side in a strong defensive position, with all of my Thunderwolves on the left to roll up that far side.

My opponent made the mistake of setting up spread across his deployment zone, holding the 2x Plague squads in reserve.

In my first turn, I rolled up my left side with the Thunder Wolves as the rest of my army laid down a withering hail of fire.

Not much else to say, my Wolf Lord (who had the warlord trait giving him and his unit furious charge, lol) and his unit accounted for personally killing the Daemon Prince, and all 3 Soul Grinders all in close combat!

Opponent was tabled by turn 5.

Game 2 was against a Tyranid army, he had 4 fliers, 2 of which were Hive Tyrants, the other 2 were a new form of Nid, I have not seen before, the Hammer and Anvil deployment helped here I think.  He was too aggressive with his flyers, and I was able to focus fire on one at a time.  I used my Heavy Bolter squad to great effect, attempting to cause grounding effects, then open up with my Lascannons.  My Thunderwolves bypassed the Monstrous creatures and took out all of his scoring swarms.

Opponent was tabled by turn 5.

Going into game 3 I was tied for 1st place.  I went up against a Tau army with 2x Riptides, 2x 3 man broadside suits, 2x units of pathfinders, Fireblade Cadre as commander, 4x squads of Fire Warriors, 2 of which were EMP'd with Devil Fish transports, and 2x large units of Kroot.

The mission was the one with one objective in each deployment zone.

I held my objective firmly and attempted to take his with my large Grey Hunter pack and all of my Thunder Wolves.

I made a mess of his army, but I just didn't have enough of an assault element to break through the wall of gunfire he was able to produce.  I ended up losing to first blood and slay the warlord.

At the end of the day, I took 2nd place.  Not a bad day at all, it was nice to dust off my Wolves for a day of battle!

Bravo littlebitz!! I love the fact that you took some real unseen choices in 6th edition to this tourney.

How did the Dreadnoughts perform?? I am currious because, like most of us, I have two dreads just gathering dust My bet is that most of us do!!

End of Line

Thanks guys!

The Dreads did ok.  I took them for the additional ranged fire power.  The thought being lots of armor on the board, and the the Thunder Wolf threat the Dreads survived pretty well.  In fact I only lost 1 the entire day.

I don't take the true "Rifleman" varient, because I just see any self respecting Space Wolf residing in a Dreadnought giving up his powerfist for anything!!!

Oh, and Heavy Bolter LongFangs are the way to go baby!!!

Good to see someone else put heavy bolters to good use, as well as your dreads. My dread usually has the assault cannon and a heavy flamer, so Eldar weep in his presence. How well did your Iron Priest do? I assume he was there to hang out with the Predators?

I'm with Fyth on the Iron Priest as well.

I run a 3 HB/2 PC LF pack quite often to much liking. Often accompanied by Logan so they can roam around and throw lots of bullets at the baddies!!

End of Line

Thanks again guys!

I like the Iron Priest, I put him on the Thunder Wolf with 4x Cyber Wolves to act as another Thunder Wolf type unit, I use him in full support of the lord and his Thunder Wolf Cav unit, running up behind them, or to one side.

I find him effective in this capacity, especially with the 4 ablative wounds the CyberWolves provide.
