Flesh is for losers, in steel I trust: Second encounter

Brothers!

As promised I wrote the battle-reports on my two first battles with my new Clan Raukaan! (you can see my list here: http://www.bolterand...aukaan-1850pts/) The first report against Tau can be found here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287850-flesh-is-for-losers-in-steel-i-trust-first-encounter/

I tailored my list a bit from my opponent's encouragement and swapped the Centurions with a Gorgon's Chain-Chapter Master w/ power axe and added Inquisition as allies, taking a single psyker-Inquisitor w/ 3 servo skulls and 3 heavy bolter-servitors.

The second battle was against Tyranids.. Lots and lots of flying Tyranids.. My opponent used the new data-sheet as a bulk of his list and looked something like this:

3x Hive Tyrants w/ wings and twin-linked devourers.

Crone

2 Harpies

3x20 Gargoyles

30 Termagants

Tervigon

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We rolled Dawn of War for deployment and for the mission Big Guns Never Tire. I again won the deployment roll and Fielded my Thunderfire Cannons to the back again, placed my ADL as wide as I could to block the line of free movement and placed my Icarus and the Inquisition forces on the other side of my deployment zone so that I had a clearer sight against the Tyranid Flyers. My opponent deployed his monsters up front and lined the swarm of lesser critters to the lines.

1st Turn: Darn night fighting saved my opponent big time as my Cannons were able to shoot only the front row of his Gargoyles, the other scattering off the table and Icarus was able to plunge a single wound from the Tervigon. My Plasma and Melta Squads dropped and secured the two objectives on my half of the table and the Plasma Squad took a better fire position from the ruins they ended up at.

My opponent flew closer with all of his big monsters as fast as he could and at the end of first turn, I was surrounded by a sea of enormous wings and fangs. His shooting did little, the Harpies killing 3 marines from the Plasma Squad.

2nd Turn: The Sternguard, along with my Librarian and Chapter master, and both of the Stormtalons arrived from the Reserves. The Chapter Master's "retinue" took ground from the ruins on the midfield and the Talons took aim at on the Tyrants. My shooting phase was a mess. I didn't even scratch the monsters beside the Crone which I succeeded dropping with the Plasma Squad and killing off with the Inquisitor's unit and Sternguard. My Inquisitor rolled Perils of the Warp. Thunderfire Cannons thinned the ranks of the Gargoyles, killing about half from two units.

On Tyranid Turn, hell was breaking loose. Though he rolled a double on the Tervigon, shutting it for the rest of the game, his Flyers were really starting to annoy me.. He killed the Inquisitor and his servitors with one Tyrant and one of my Cannons with another. The third (his warlord) Tyrant killed a few more marines from the Plasma Squad and set the two remaining battle-brothers on the run. The Harpies did little, other only popping two sternguard off from this world.

3rd Turn: My Flamer Squad dropped in the back, nearby the objective guarded by the Tervigon and loads of Termagants, which they started to purge with their flamers. My Chapter Master charged from the Sternguard Squad towards the ranks of more Termagants closing against my side of the table. I managed to drop the other Harpy and thought killing it off with my Libarian's Psychic Shriek. It was left off with a single wound and I was losing hope of getting rid off the thing when suddenly, bolter fire from my remaining Plasma Squad ended the misery of the Bio-monster! Yay! I managed to get 3 Wounds against one of the Tyrants with the Talons (which had changed to hover) and with the Melta Squad right beneath to swooping giant but failed to drop it down. The Chapter Master heroically assaulted the masses of Termagants and killed 3 beasts right off, keeping the beasts busy for a while but taking a wound in the process.

Tyranids started to feel the pain but the flying monsters were not giving up. Two Tyrants killed off the remaining Cannon and the third landed to strike against the Sternguard. Tides of Gargoyles swooped closer from both ends of the table. Tervigon and Termagants assaulted against the Flamer Squad which plunged two wounds from the Tervigon and taking ZERO casualties! The Chapter Master was fighting for his life, hacking another 3 bio-beasts around him and taking another wound. One of the Gargoyle swarms assaulted my Melta Squad and killed two battle-brothers right off.

4th Turn: Things were looking bad on my end too. I kept the Talons hovering and blasting the wounded Tyrant, bringing it finally down! My Sternguard fired against the Tyrant lurking behind them and managed to score only one wound from it. The Librarian casted Psychic Shriek against it, hoping to kill the assailing beast but rolled a Perils of The Warp (Aaaargh! Though he managed to recover it at the end of the turn - THANK YOU FOR "IT WILL NOT DIE"!). The Flamer Squad's, Melta Squad's and the Chapter Master's future were looking pretty dark as two more brothers from Melta Squad were hacked down and another wound was plunged from the Chapter Master, leaving the grizzled commander with his last wound! Though the Flamer Squad were able to drop another wound from the Tervigon, I was sure the other Termagant unit was joining the fray next turn.

My opponent's 4th turn started and my forces started to take a serious beating. The surviving Harpy and the Warlord Tyrant dropped my other Talon and more Termagants were massing towards the Flamer Squad. Other Gargoyle unit and the other remaining Tyrant leaped against the Sternguard and issued a challenge, which my sergeant bravely accepted, sacrificing himself so that the Librarian would have the chance to slay as many Gargoyles with his force sword as he could. My Chapter Master fell at last under the weight of the Termagants and the few Gargoyles from the third unit. My Melta squad battled with all of their might but their ranks too were rapidly diminishing, only two brothers remaining. The Flamer Squad stood hard though, inflicting yet another wound on the Tervigon and taking only one casualty!

5th and Final Turn: It was time to make my final attempt to turn the game on my side and the two remaining Plasma Squad marines secured the objective from the middle of the table. The Flamer Squad managed to get two krak grenades to wound the Tervigon and SLAYED it finally! My Librarian was ready to meet the Hive Tyrant in the last epic duel. The beast struck two hits and managed to get one wound, which our hero managed to shrug off by his Feel no Pain! Librarian struck back, scoring two hits! I rolled the two dice in my hand and watched my opponent starting to sweat. I threw the dice and ended scoring a 2 and a 5... A 5?!?! (WHY DIDN'T I arm him with an axe...?) My Sternguard died trying to buy some time for the marines on the objective. My Flamer Squad kept bashing some Termagant heads and stood as solidly as before. My Melta Squad's Sergeant was only one to be left alive against the Gargoyles but kept his ground still!

My opponent's last turn was showing he was as desperate as I was. His Warlord Tyrant swooped to shoot the two marines from the objective and managed to kill ONLY ONE of them! This joy was short though, as his third Gargoyle swarm swooped towards and managed to assault him with a range of 5".. He overwatched them but failed to score that one Gargoyle off which would've failed his assault. Last Harpy dropped the last Talon from the sky and we ended the game there.

Wheh.. Talking about a CLOSE GAME! I enjoyed it though I lost, the score narrowing by every minute right to the end!

I suppose I would've played better without changing the list, those Centurions would've been nice to have against those Tyrants.. Other than that, I think I played as good as I could, causing even a couple of heart-stopping moments with the Librarian and the Plasma Squad's two battle-brothers!

I've built 10 marines so far and I'm starting to paint them next weekend. If you wan't to see the work so far, visit the Gallery to see my Librarian! (Feel free to comment and rate him)
