30k and the Legion

Grey Mage

Recommended Posts

I'd love to do a 30k force, I just don't have the money for it!

Also honestly if I was going to do a 30k army I'd most likely do one of the Legions before it took on the modern name and color scheme. The Dusk Raiders, War Hounds or most likely I'd go with the Fearless, the Salamanders before they were Salamanders.

Wolves are a specialist in the way they look - very unique... I wouldn't touch upon Wolves in 30k until I see what sculpts they have in store and how 'wolfified' they decide to make them :)

That doesn't mean to say that they couldn't be done using basic legion model looks... but who'd want to ? ;)

I'm undecided whether to go for 30K Space Wolves or a mixed army of Istvan survivors, I'm waiting for FW to release rules & models for the Wolves & Pyroclasts for the Salamanders before I decide which I'm going to pursue.  Although I had startied to pick up some FW basic armour variants (admittedly these were originally going to be for either 40K CSM or Wolves until GW's strange descisions of late wiped out my remaining interest in 40K).

Right now I'm just hoping the rumours of GW & FW getting closer doesn't mean that Messrs Kelly & Ward write HH book 4.

I will definitely buy and collect a VI Legion army. I'm also awaiting the book on Prospero. I hope that Forge world will do us justice with the minis and the rules. I hope that we will have access to the sky hunters units. But most of all, I'm awaiting the rules and the model of the Wolf King. I've been waiting for its model for 15 years now...msn-wink.gif

I am waiting for both the 4th Horus Heresy book, and the Legion specific models and rules Forge World will bring at that time.

I have a small HH Night Lords force I am working on and have set aside some bits (torsos and such) for my wolves once I get there!!

End of Line

Not me, GM, I've got too much sunk into five 40k armies to go start building another one for the same army in a different era. It doesn't help that the FW books and models are even more expensive than base GW products are. I think I'll just patiently wait it out for our 6e (7e?) codex and see what new units I absolutely must have.

A lot of folks seem to be drifting between the two, Grey Mage. For me it's the pull of really nice marine models without the same old bowlegged stance to them. Accompanied by some great sculpts, and you get to play in the time of Primarchs and such a lush story (fluff) environment. I have read through most of the HH book one, but admittedly, it's been most of the story and less of the rules, etc.

There's a couple of guys here who shun the FW stuff and comment on it's price being for 'rich snobs' and 'power gamers', but they both play Tau-Dar so I can't help but want to kick teeth in just so they'll shut the :cuss up...

End of Line

I have been pondering for a while if I should fully take the leap over to resin, I already have a contemptor and couple of jetbikes for my wolves, but if I take the leap and start a 30k legion, it will probably not be to HH Space wolves. My Wolves are grey in the 40k setting and I would like to do a legion with maybe a bit brighter colour.

*Whispering* I am drawn towards the HH Night lords, but don't tell anyone.

I'm currently getting a taste for 30k with a loyalist survivors force, plus I'm dragging all my metal beakies out from wherever I can find them and looking at building a raven guard force as well.

I will be getting a wolves force when the books finally make it to them. I do have a daft number of metal marines which will be slowly sold off to fund the new shines.

It is not a matter of if but when.  I have held off on the Catiphractii and other goodness hoping for Wolves specific stuff.  When it hits I will be dropping a whole lot of cash on that stuff.

I am praying for a Bjorn model.  Pre-Dreadnought of course.  How awesome would that be?

I've tried. Here's a very early WIP.

Three things catch me out every time I put brush to plastic and resin, though.

The first is that I'm really struggling to get a decent, distinctive grey that I'm actually happy with.

The second is that anything I use in my army, I'd then feel uncomfortable using in the Heresy series, to head off the inevitable "AD-B made them great because he plays that army" nonsense. Best not to give any ammunition to that maddening camp. And I have a lot of ideas for the Wolves, so it comes down to where I'd rather use them.

The third is that I'm waiting for the new sculpts. I couldn't care less how their rules will run, as I'm confident they'll be unique and fun no matter what shape they take, but every time I make a Heresy-era Wolf, I'm left thinking "Is he going to be armed right? Is he something my slow-ass painting skills are wasting time on now, when the new sculpts are a billion times better than my kitbashing? Will there be better shoulder pads?"

And so on.

I’ve got plans for 30K but luckily with the number of other
models to get through before that odds are by the time I get to it the new FW
sculpts will be out.

On the subject of greys.

Grey Hunters 2_2

This is what I’m currently working with for 40K for my
wolves with plans to keep it for 30K since I’ve always liked the idea of the
Wolves retaining their colors through the 10,000 years since the heresy.
