'Normal' Alpha Legion?

Recommended Posts

For what it's worth, I've been toying with the idea of an air-cav AL force, inspired by the 'Fireforce' formations from the Rhodesion Army (on my phone, can't link, sorry). In my mind, it's a relatively 'normal' force structure, but at the same time, typically AL in that it's essentially a special forces raid/sweep/stop (read:assassinate) force that also relies on hidden observers (AL operatives) to locate the enemy. The formation originated in the Legion's early days, but saw extended use at the outbreak of the Heresy. In particular, searching for surviving loyalists.

The 'stop' part is a seeker squad with banestrike ammo, accompanied by a vigilator, mounted in a storm eagle. The sweeps are a pair of tac squads & a termi squad in storm eagles, with a fire raptor & javelin squadron for support.

So, what I'm trying to say is that a 'normal' Alpha Legion force would work, and that there are ways to tweak it s that it feels more 'Alpha'.

That's one of the most awesome sounding ideas I've ever heard.

I am definitely going to file that for later...

If a certain scenario would require a legionnaire to wear a frilly dress then by Alpharius they would send one out to do that, and he would wear it with skill and pride!

... and now I want to model an Astartes in a frilly dress with a fine floral bonnet to use as an objective. And then use bleach on my eyes and brain for the image.

Thanks, Honda. I'm honoured you like the idea.

Now that I'm in front of a pc, I can provide the link to my source material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireforce

Not much, I know, but it gives me more room to get creative, I think.

I've always equated the Alpha Legion with the CIA Special Activities Division in my mind.

Each legionary being more of an operative than a soldier. Operating covertly in small groups for the most part, performing assassinations (the attempt on Guilliman, for example), sabotage (what they did to the Raven Guard), and the like. Being a "force multiplier" to the traitor's cause.

That being said, they are still a space marine legion and would maintain a legion's full arsenal - meaning they have access to all "generic" units that a legion would possess. For example, elite scout squads would recon the area of operation before a battle, infiltration units inserted into the enemy's rear to sabotage communication, destroy fuel/ammo dumps, shock troops dropped at the beginning of a pitched battle to throw the enemy into disarray, and heavy infantry with armor/air support used in a final thrust to finish off what remains of the enemy.
