"Endangered Hero" - Narrative Scenario BatRep.

Recommended Posts

"This is Veteran Sergeant Kael! Brother Captain Arcule is being overwhelmed! Brothers, we must rush to his aid!"

"We are on our way, Blood Angel"

"What? Who is this?"

"This is Marshal Darklight of the Black Templars.  We're coming, Battle-cousin. These heretics will not claim him"

Greetings Brothers!

The other day, my two buddies and I put together a scenario.  Here's the gist of it:

Heretics: 1500 points Chaos Space Marines

Loyalists: 1500 points Blood Angels/Black Templars + 1 'distressed' HQ and a single unit.  Shared a single FoC.

One Loyalist HQ (cannot be warlord) and a unit, selected from the FoC (but does not count towards the 750 points) starts in the Heretics' deployment zone.  Heretics start entirely in reserves and walk on the table.  The HQ (and his unit) in question gets assaulted and most likely killed early on. When the HQ dies, it's assumed he has fallen but is not yet dead and he becomes an objective, much like the Relic.  Whoever holds the Objective at the end of the game wins.  Alternatively, if the Loyalist HQ somehow miraculously survives the entire game, loyalists auto-win.

So basically, it's a rescue mission. The Chaos are trying to kidnap the Captain, and the Blood Angels with their Templar saviors are trying to recover the threatened hero.  There's a bit more to it that, but that's all that's really important considering the rules were made up and agreed on as needed.

Armies as my horrible memory remembers them

Khorne Lord w/ Murder Sword, Burning Brand

Since it was a story-driven exhibition, I've decided to simply portray the highlights in the game in literary fashion... Enjoy!

+++ Moments before Dawn+++

First light of dawn was visible over the hills to the East, but what had the Blood Angel Captain Arcule and eight of his Assault Marines' attention was the eerie purple haze to the West.  It soon erupts into a horrible series of flashes and howling noise before settling on a sizable Heretic force.

"Brothers! Stand firm!" Captain Arcule announced and he and his brethren used what precious time they had to get into a defensive posture within the small structure they had recently entered.

It was a trap.  The Chaos dogs were waiting for him.  They had to be.  This was the first that he'd been relatively secluded from the rest his battle company since they arrived on this ball of dirt.

Boltgun rounds began exploding all over the structure.  Within seconds, three of his brothers already lay lifeless next to him.

"This is Brother Captain Arcule! Brothers, we're under attack! We need immediate reinforcemen--"

The crash of the monstrous Hellbrute charging through the wall grabbed the Captain's full attention.

...

"Your timing is impeccable, Marshal"  Brother Kael of his Captain's Honour Guard said into the vox.

"Don't thank us yet, Veteran Sergeant." his helmet's vox-speaker replied.  "Push your vehicles up the right side of those ruined structures, we'll move up the left"

Kael fought back the urge to explain his disgust at accepting another Chapter's orders, but he felt this situation was too dire for this. He would wait.  "Understood."

...

The Legion Sicaran's driver felt the relic tank's pain before he realized what had happened. "Gah, where'd that come from?" He instructed the turret gunner and the Lascannons on either flank of it's hull to fire in the direction of the enemy Lascannon that had just grazed the hull.  It was still minutes before the day's first light would give him an answer to whether or not the guns had killed their attacker, but given the blind nature of night fighting, he heavily doubted it.

   "Battle-Cousin, your right-rear flank!"

The Driver turned to his instruments in response to the Blood Angel's warning "What?" He then saw the bikers readying their Meltaguns "Uh oh..."

...

"HAHAHA! Come, let us see what these metal boxes contain!" The Chaos biker chanted as he readied his Melta.  The three of them had weaved through the ruins and had come out behind the Black Templar's Sicaran and two Rhinos.

"Remember, my Brothers.  These fools are fed to us by the generosity of grandfather Nurgle! Show them his kindn--" Two of the three bikes erupt in a spectacular display of fire and shrapnel.

The confused remainder of the trio looks over his shoulder and sees the Blood Angel Predator Annihilator whose weapons were still steaming in a guilty fashion.  Footslogging along behind it were a squad of 10 Loyalist Tactical Marines who began to fire at him.  One round exploded in his front suspension, but he was otherwise unscathed.

"I guess this glory is all mine, hahahah!" The biker leveled his Melta with the Sicaran.  He squeezed the trigger at the same instant that the front suspension broke.  The biker was too busy landing on his face to notice that his Melta shot had gone wide.  The heretic tried to get to his feet but the bolt pistol round that penetrated the side of his helmet made that difficult.

...

Brother Kael lowered his bolt pistol and turned his attention away from the tank he'd just spared. "Let that be a token of our appreciation, Black Templar" he intoned.   He then turned back to the Heretic line that had started to almost entirely shift to the side of the block that the Templars were occupying.  At his point he noticed two more important details; Firstly, he saw the filthy heretic unit dragging his Brother Captain's near-lifeless form into a larger structure.  This offended Kael, almost as much as the second detail, the Chaos Lord and his cohort of cultists who were also bee-lining towards the Black Templars' line.

"I'm not letting you take all of the glory. Brothers! CHAARRGE!"

...

The Chaos Vindicator driver forcibly moved his tank through a defense line of rubble. "Get ready, I found a nice juicy target" the driver announced as he spotted the Blood Angel honour guard unit advancing on foot. His gunner loaded the demolisher cannon and awaited for the signal to fire.

The daemon that possessed the Vindicator, however, had a different idea.  The cannon fired prematurely and simply made a really big crater.

"You imbecile! Did I say fire!? NO!"

"It was the damn tank, I had nothing to do with it." The gunner, rather annoyed of his lack of purpose grabbed his boltgun "I think this vehicle can handle itself, I'm going out there to do things MY way!" He opened the side door in time for the explosive autocannon shell to enter the exposed hull.

...

The gunner of the Blood Angel Predator Destructor simply chuckled at what used to be the Chaos Vindicator.

...

"Ow..." Sword Brother Claus got to his feet after the his Rhino seem to be blown out from underneath him and his Crusaders...

"Status?" Claus heard his Marshal demand over the vox.

"We're fine, sire." He then noticed the some 20 traitor marines heading for them.
"Steel yourselves, Brother-Initiates!" The powerfields on his Lightning Claws cracked to life and they braced for the assault.

...

The Sicaran spotted the Hellbrute in the structure that was crawling with heretics. The gunner caught a glance of the fallen Captain nearby. "That monstrosity will be an issue for our infantry..."

"Then kill it, Brother!" The driver replied

"With pleasure..."

...

In traditional Chaos fashion, the Hellbrute's death was neither quiet or subtle.  Once the Accelerator Autocannon shells made contact it exploded violently in a shower of shrapnel and unstable warp energy. The Chaos Lord watched on in disgust as 8 of cultist followers and 6 of his Marines were evaporated by the explosion. "Are you kidding me?!"

...

Marshal Darklight and his Sword Brethren bodyguards saw the explosion from beside their Rhino. Brother Albrecht, the veteran Sword Brother in the unit, whistled in admiration at the spectacular display of the Hellbrute detonation. They looked back to their comrades of Sword Brother Claus' squad who were now entangled by Traitor Marines. Claus and the Brother Initiate wielding the power sword were carving their attackers into tiny pieces with ease.

"I don't think they need our help, sire" Albrecht jested.

Before Marshal Darklight could respond, the wall behind them crashed down revealing the backend of a Chaos Rhino, and out poured yet another squad of Chaos Marines.

"Plasma guns!" Darklight warned his Sword Brethren.

What happened next made the Templars consider two possibilities; either Chaos truly was random, or these Chaos marines just had really bad aim.  The majority of the plasma missed the squad entirely.  One unlucky Sword Brother fell to the energy barrage, and another collapsed from the boltgun rounds colliding with his artificer armour.

"Well, this is just embarrassing, isn't it Heretic?" Darklight taunted.

He and his Sword Brethren laughed at the Heretic's incompetence as they made their counter attack.

...

The Rhino never stood a chance.  Once it had delivered it's payload of Marines into the Templar's line, it almost immediately exploded from the Missile Launcher the Blood Angel Tactical squad possessed.  Were they not falling to insanity from their genetic disorder, they may have cheered, or perhaps reported the vehicle kill to Brother Kael. Instead, they simply made their way up the battlefield, roaring and shouting hysterics.

...

There was an explosion that caused the Sicaran driver to cry out in agony. That last lascannon shot from the Traitor line hit something vital and the Relic tank's machine spirit refused to respond. The driver detached himself from the driver's post and, with more effort than it should have taken, turned to see the charred remains of his gunner.

"Marshal... The Sicaran... *pant*  is down... catastrophic damage..." The driver then noticed the large metal piece of shrapnel that had punched through his abdomen.

...

Darklight heard his brother's last words and this fueled his cause further. He sliced through countless heretic marines to vent his fury.  "Albrecht, we're running out of time. Go! Secure the Blood Angel's Captain.

   "Marshal--" Albrecht started to protest.

"GO! He repeated.  I will stand with the Initiates!"

Albrecht and his two remaining brothers broke off and headed for the structure.  This structure, Albrecht had noted, was the source of the last LasCannon shot he'd seen before the Sicaran pilot reported being hit. "No Pity. No Remorse. No Fear."

...

"Ha! I killed it! I KILLED IT!" the Traitor with the lascannon said from the window.

The Aspiring champion looked at the boaster, then looked back down at his prize.  The Blood Angel at his feet, barely clinging to life. The champion laughed. "Won't be long now, 'brother'" he said mockingly to the Blood Angel.  "Soon the portals will reopen, and you'll witness the glory of the dark gods yourself."

...

   "Claus!"

The Sword Brother turned to see Darklight charging into combat at his side. Once the Marshal arrived, the two stood side by side and defended each other's flanks from the onslaught of Traitor Marines and Cultists.  Of the initial nine initiates under Claus' command, only two remained alive.

Then Darklight saw him.  The Chaos Warlord, mere meters away and advancing towards him. All seemed to move out of the way for both the Marshal and the Chaos Lord as the two readied for one on one combat.

...

The Aspiring Champion, grasped the chains he used to drag the Terminator's body all this way tightly.  Moments, seconds, and he'd deliver his prize to his masters.  Perhaps it was this daydreaming that lead to his demise, or perhaps it was the disbelief of looking across the field and seeing the Blood Angel's Predator Destructor on the second floor of that structure. Either way, he stood there as the heavy bolter round removed his head, and his lifeless body slumped down next to his prize.  The others in the room began to scramble for the prize to claim it as their own, but the hail of Heavy Bolt shells, and LasCannons from the two Blood Angel Predators deterred them.

...

Darklight lay on the ground, left arm removed and right arm pinned under the foot of the Chaos Lord. His daemonic sword pointed at the Marshal's throat.

"I had not expected to claim two prizes of such glorious position..." the Lord began to chuckle.

"You aren't taking me anywhere, heretic--" The Chaos Lord put more force unto Darklight's arm, severing the thought and producing a growl of agony.
   "Such bravado."
Claus charged the Chaos Lord, but the heretic battle Leader hopelessly outclassed him.  Without removing his foot from the fallen Marshal's arm, he cleanly removed Claus' head from his shoulders. The entire exchange was mere seconds, but through the Marshal's pained eyes it seemed an eternity.  The murderer's sword pointed back to Darklight's face.

"I must thank you for delivering yourself to me, Loyalist.  I truly only expected your comrade's attendance to this little event. You've become quite the little bonus..."

The air behind the Chaos Lord began to haze is a familiar purple glow.

"What?" The Chaos Lord turned to see the warp portal opening sooner than he'd expected. "No!"

And as fast as it had come, the purple hue was gone. As was the remnants of the Heretic Force.

...

Kael knelt down beside the lifeless body of Captain Arcule.  He had come too late, the Captain he swore to protect was dead.

"At least the Traitors did not claim their prize" Sword Brother Albrecht said in an attempt to encourage his Battle Cousin.

Kael didn't turn to look at the Black Templar. He simply looked down at the lifeless form in front of him. "What of your commander? Did he survive?"

"Some injuries, but he'll be fine." Albrecht walked over beside Kael and knelt in respect to the fallen Captain.

Game: Draw!

Neither side held the commander when the 7 turns expired.

I hope you guys enjoyed this wall of text!

In case you're wondering: We're tweaking the rules of this scenario to come up with something a bit more universal and balanced.  In our playtest, it felt like the Chaos side had a huge advantage, even considering he couldn't roll anything to save his life! Eg: Hellbrute explosion killing 14 of his own models, Melta biker beside the Sicaran missed, etc..

Once we're happy with it, I'll post it in the homegrown section so you guys can give it a shot if you'd like!

Sure thing Brother Honda! I'll let you know when we've sorted it out.

As for the pictures... well our board is pretty ghetto.  Game cases and cardboard for cover, Templar models are the only ones painted, etc..  It's almost embarrassing. Though, a summer project my buddy and I have is to finish the table we're working on to make it look more professional.  Once that's out of the way, I'll probably be more inclined to take pictures :P

Darklight,

Super easy stuff I've seen lately for terrain.

1. Save soda cans, especially energy drink ones.  Once primed, they make PERFECT refinery towers.  Pegasus hobbies even sells a kit so you can just plop them right on a base!

2. Battle maps from front line gaming.  I just got one.  It's amazing for the price

http://feedyournerd.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/4/24044140/938412_orig.jpg

3.  You can actually use dirt and debris for debris.  Don't need special sands.  Just get some cheap boards at a craft store, cover in elmers glue, and cover them in stuff.  Then throw more glue on top.  When it tries, prime it, and dry brush. Instant terrain!
