A question about legion colours.

I have a few questions that popped to mind about, as the title says, the colours of certain legions during the GC/HH and a question about the heraldry of the XVI.

1st. Space wolves, were their armour plain grey or a deep metallic grey? The posters from the FW weekender (last year I think) shows them in what looks like metallic armour (I have pics if necessary).

2nd. Iron Hands, their armour was it jet black or dark iron?

3rd. Luna Wolves, due to the amount of "Eyes of Horus" on the special units from the XVIth legion Im wondering if this is something that the Luna Wolves might have worn too among the Justaerin and Reavers? The XVIth legion is one of my (if not the) favorite legions when they were loyal, Im a die hard loyalist, so Im a bit at a loss here.

1.) I'd say personal preference. They're described in the literature as wearing "grey". So, whatever floats your boat, so to speak.

2.) See number one since description says "black" but pictures from Massacre show a metallic sheen.

3.) Yes. The Eye of Horus was a personal motif of the Primarch even before the Luna Wolves became the Sons of Horus. It could easily be seen that those who gained the Primarch's favor could be given permission as an award or laurel. And then after the transition, well everyone wore it then.

1. I want to say a more metallic grey, only because the Word Bearers are supposed to be more of a dullish grey, but I think the Iron Warriors are a metallic grey as well so I dunno.

After looking at the pictures of the SW poster, the WB poster and the IW poster, I think the SW might just be a darker grey than the WB, but still it seems to have a sort of brown rust and a bit of glare on it, so quite confusing.

2. Apparently FW changed the Iron Hands' black to dark iron because they didn't want there to be too many legions with all black colour schemes. Originally some IHs players worried this would make them too much like the Iron Warriors, but the addition of black and white to the dark Iron in the FW colour schemes seems to have avoided this problem. Although there was some chatter about only the Legion's veterans being dark Iron & the rest being black recently, so take from that what you will.

I always thought Iron Warriors were more silver/chainmail body with black shoulders and gold/brass trim and plenty of construction stripes to go around.

Iron Hands are black according to historical fluff, but dark iron in Forge World.  It's kind of like how FW made Sons of Horus sea green a little darker and Emperor's Children a less annoying purple/magenta in favor of a more majestic violet.

That's why personal preference seems the best road. ;)

Agreed with Kol. What do you like best? Person I like to avoid metallics, or if I have to use them I shade them a decent amount to get rid of the sheen. Space Wolves would look nice in a dark grey, but I think Iron Warriors would as well... similar to the grey of Dusk Raiders.

In addition the World Eaters were predominantly (blood stained) white, Death Guard off white and Raven Guard black. It seems that the Imperial Truth not only rejected superstition but quite a significant chunk of the paint range.

Well, the Fists, Ultras, and Blood Angels covered the primary colors, the Emperor's Children are purple, and the Alpha Legion are green & blue.  There wasn't a need for halving or quartering at this point.  What's left?  Brown Space Marines from the II Legiones Astartes Dirt Mongers?

Or the XI Legion Ostrogoths.

Believe me, I understand the challenge. At this point, I am planning on going with a dark, metallic grey. How I get there remains to be seen. I'm also not rushing into this one simply because I do want to see what FW comes up with in Book 4.

Indeed, I was initially waiting to see what comes out for BA, SW and Ultramarines. I really want to see what they get before deciding a legion, but I might have to wait for a while.

EDIT: And another question for you brothers. What would have been the most common armour mark for the Luna Wolves around the time of the Ullanor Crusade? MK II/III or MK IV? I know that Horus would probably make sure his favoured legion and those of his closest brothers would have the best equipment but its never mentioned when the MKIV first appeared in the legions.

Space Wolf colours are one extreme, and were remarked to the the colour of the sky during a storm, so a grey not too dissimilar from the grey of the input text box on this forum.

Word bearers are also grey, but rather a slate grey.

Iron Warriors are the other end of the extreme; dark, smart grey the colour of unpainted steel rebar.

I'm new to the forum, but I wanted to respond. I was re-reading Horus Rising yesterday, and toward the beginning, Loken describes Sejanus as wearing MKIV plate. I know the FW sculpt for Loken has him in MKIV, and the Sons of Horus sculpts seem to be in modified MKIV. I think, with all that, you'd be safe to assume MKIV was the Luna Wolves' preferred mark.

Yeah, after looking through the timeline shown in HH: Massacre it says:

"The Triumph at Ullanor - 000.M31 and The Luna Wolves are renamed Sons of Horus 003.M31" So with only a time frame of 3 years I suppose its safe to say the MK IV was around at the time of Ullanor and therefore the most widely used by the Luna Wolves.

And well MK IV was the most advanced mark of PA so it would only make sense for the XVI to have as much as possible.
