Whirlwind Scorpius: Effective?

Hey gents just wanted to get your opinions on the Whirlwind Scorpius. Basically whether or not you've used it, faced off against it, or seen others use it, and if you see it as a useful addition to a Space Marine army. On paper it sounds pretty juicy: front armor 13, side armor 12, rear 10, the missile launcher is str8 ap3, small blast, heavy 1, 48" range. However if the vehicle remains stationary it gains 1+d3 shots making it seem like a pretty decent option for keeping enemy heads down/decimating MEQs.

Anyways, it'd be great to get the opinions of those who have used it before and speak to it's actual effectiveness on the battlefield. Cheers!

I'm a huge fan of them. I've gotten great results out of the one I have in my Legion army.

The only two downsides of using them over the normal Whirlwind are A.) Slightly increased points, and B.) Smaller template.

The way I see it, you're not paying that much of a premium for the extra armor. The second point is mitigated by the idea that you get +D3 templates in a barrage configuration. I'm not sure how you'd run the math on it, since models can be arraigned totally different ways, but the area covered by the 5" template is 19.6 inches squared, compared to about 21 inches squared covered by 3 small templates (most common from 1+d3 I suspect). The huge upside there is that you can tag the same model multiple times with many smaller templates.

The list of why the Scorpius is superior goes on with light anti-vehicle duty (tripley so for squadrons), better armor piercing value, *much* more resilient... those 40 or so extra points have paid for themselves every single time I've taken it.

Hope that helps!

Nice that is a rather good couple of points. Basically I'm trying to figure out what I want to fit in the the 130pt slot I have for a 1,000 point list and it's between a Predator executioner with the plasma blaster and heavy bolters or the whirlwind scorpius. Both are fairly appetizing and seem deadly on paper but I don't know which I'd rather go for as they are both fairly recent additions to the space marine armory.

Hmm... the only place I could see the predator being more effective is if you have to deal with a lot of terminators or their equivalent. Does your list typically struggle against +2 armor saves?

Otherwise, I'd go with the Scorpius. It's just as heavily armored, less points, *much* more area covered (1 small template compared to 2-4) and more effective against everything except terminators. Bonus is that the predator has to be in line of sight to do damage. The Scorpius does not. It can safely plug away at your enemies from behind terrain.

That strength 8 comes in super handy when you want to instant death a Space Marine captain too ^_^

Ooooh good point I wasn't thinking about the str 8 for insta kill, man that would ruin my friends day lol. Nothing more ignoble than getting blasted by rocket arty before ever even getting to show off your fancy armor and weapons lol.

In the newest Imperial Armour book, (Imperial Armour 2: Second Edition) they include "Legacies of Glory" for vehicles. There are about 20 or so, with various effects like giving every space marine within 12" fearless, or ignoring cover, or gaining Tank Hunters and +1 BS when firing at anything with the daemonforge rule.

Each typically has two points costs associated with it, usually between applying it to a normal vehicle or a super heavy. Some of the smaller ones start at 10pts and go up to 40 or 50 for the really good stuff

Just read through them and the ignores cover for blast weapons is easily one of the nastiest for either the scorpius or the Predator Executioner with the plasma blaster. Really cool how FW did that, I love fluffy rules.

Or Fellblade devil.gif

Putting the "No Deepstrike Scatter" on a drop pod is deadly too.

So is bringing a space marine bike commander with eternal warrior a 2+/3++ and a S7AP2 super sword. Sometimes, you just need to bring a bit of nastiness happy.png

True enough, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I actually wrote up a new list using that particular legacy, feel free to check it out: Clicky

The Scorpius is Great but I don't allow it's use in normal 40k games.

It's on a par with the Heldrake when it comes to overpowered/broken units.
