Lions trait from the emperor

Before the HH books came out, it was the ability to see an opponent's tactics and know how to counter them.

Now I think it is grim resolve to see things through to the end. Like the hunt for all of the Chaos beasts on Caliban and his persistent hunt for the Night Lords primarch.

This could be very biased but the night haunter couldn't take the lion ...the night haunter would get the stuffing kicked out of him if it came to duel between him and the lion

Which is why the Night Haunter continued with his hit-and-fade tactics. It is the only one the Lion could not counter effectively since the counter is to know when and where he'll strike or where he is located.

Edit: Wall o'text incoming!

It is also only speculation that each Primarch actually got a kind of "super trait" from the Emperor, there is no real conclusive evidence of this. While some of the Primarchs seem to exhibit a tendency toward one really big thing, not all of them do, people use that concept as a crutch to explain the Primarchs. The truth is that each Primarch is a complex character with varying amounts of traits that come together to make them who they are. Each one has reasons, both explained and probably things we know nothing about, for why they fell to Chaos or didn't, and no one personality trait in any of them holds the entire reason for it, not even Horus.

Even the grim resolve of the Lion is likely not a single character trait, but a complex of psychological concepts that he exhibits and like all human beings, can be attributed to more than just his genetic structure. He grew up alone in what would have been a terrifying situation that should have seen a human child dead (luckily he's not human), where he learned all kinds of things about how to survive, many that might have been brutal out of sheer pragmatism. He was a wild thing when he was found and was taught to be humanized, and we see this exhibited in his lashings out, where his civilized mask slips and the last Great Beast of Caliban rips its way out through him into those around him. It's very likely that these occurances remind him of how unhuman he really is, and he must retreat back into the shadows, compose himself and developing the resolve needed to do so occurred after he began to be humanized. He was visited by a Great Demon of Tzeentch during his time in the great Calibanite forest, and likely endured a great deal of mental stress staving off that influence. Even the sociopolitical climate of his upbringing on Caliban after he was found by Luther helped shape his personality.

Honestly, one of the things that likely shaped the Lion's sheer stubbornness (another to describe what might be perceived as resolve) is the very fact that he doesn't fully understand or control his own emotions, or those of people around him, leading him to dig in, not deal with what he doesn't fully grasp, and plow ahead with the initial plan. It may actually be a lack of flexibility due to an inability to deal those emotions. Things like that are double edged swords. It the right situation, it can be a great thing, in the wrong situation, it justs gets transhumans killed for little gain.

So, while the Primarchs can likely be distilled down to a single archetypal concept, let's not assume that this is actually the truth about the character and explore all of the characters for the more fully fleshed beings they have become because of the HH series. None of these characters are taking actions because of simple "Hey, I'm EVIL!" or other simplistic concepts like that.

This duel actually has been written... you should give it a read - Savage Weapons (Short Story) in Age of Darkness.

How did the lion fight him?

Prince of Crows (Novella) in yet another anthology, Shadows of Treachery would answer that one.

And has another duel of the Primarchs in it! Do I actually need a spoiler tag for this? No, probably not... people were probably thinking there would be massive spoilers here. Muhahahaha, go read the book.

Or you can find out a little of both of those stories here on lexicanum.

Spoiler Alert from a HH Book:

In unremembered empire:  The Lion actually fights the Night Haunter, first he stalks him aboard the ship as he's trapped him in the lower decks (continuation of Savage Weapons I believe).  But he gets out and then both Lion AND Roboute fight him 2v1 and the Night Haunter actually makes them look pretty inept, nearly killing them as well. Vulkan then fights him but I forget who wins that, or how the Night Haunter gets away (neither of them die... or maybe one does...)
