Kitbashing/Scratchbuilding Individual Drop Pods

Recommended Posts

Does anyone happen to have suggestions for materials that would make a good start for a one-marine drop pod?

I hit on the idea of building a 'counts-as' drop pod for my Sternguard squad, using a set of clustered craters with the same footprint as the GW stock drop pod and one-man pods to represent the Astartes coming down separately but landing near each other.  (Individual pods seemed more logical than having an entire squad of the Emperor's Finest buy the farm to a single lucky flak shell.)  Inspiration having struck, I found myself with a dilemma.  Crater tutorials are everywhere - drop pods, not so much.

Ideas?

Find/Create a template and scale it down? It's the best I've got, sorry.

Cheers,

Jono

GW had a template themselves before they released the plastic kits (apparently originated in France - so you know what to google for). I remember that they even made a hobby event in the stores out of it (in Germany at least).

Any way, point is there was a thread on here where somebody made objective markers out of scaled down drop pods (supply drops - an idea that later even popped up in the Space Marine computer game). Can't find the thread anymore (it had the scaled down GW templates too), but I remember it was for a Dark Angels army.

If you search a little around online there are plenty of alternate templates and ideas kicking around too. I even remember a guy building drop pods out of small plastic bottles. Some companies that sell lasercut mdf scenery also produce some cheaper-than-GW alternatives.

For the one man drop pods I'd definitely look for the GW templates though.

And of course the moment I've posted I think of something else... Here check these out. These are 15mm so an upright standing Marine would probably just as high as the pod. I imagine a single sitting 28mm Marine would fit in there.

They are also pretty sweet models, imo.

Found the thread I was talking about.

There are the Halo ODST Drop Pod toys that are about the right size for a single space marine, I thinnnnnk.

Yes that is correct I owning several  of those and fitting a tactical marine and almost fitting an assault marine in(minus the melta gun which would go to the side.) that would be perfect.

ODSTs are essentially Paratroopers.  The problem with Paratroopers are that you are throwing lots of guys and scattering them all over the place (see Halo 3: ODST game's storyline)

Drop pods avoid this by delivering a concentration of force to a single spot.  In the fluff-the drop podding force drops SO MANY that AA is overwhelmed and likely hits empties.

I hate the the Storm Troopers can't be taken as a proper codex by themselves (Not really) and can't be taken by Chaos in anycase.  I LOVE the new storm troopers, they are ODSTs of 40k, and the BEST non augmented Humanity has to offer.  I had an idea for making a Spartan type army (Vanilla CSMs with Mark of Tzeentch) backed up by Storm Troopers...but yeah.

Oh well, GeeDub just saved me a bunch of money by denying me the ability to use them in my armies!
