Spartan, why would you go for a Land Raider?

Standard raiders can be used as Dedicated Trans for your troops, whereas Spartans take up valuable HS slots.

Beyond that, nope. I'm focusing on making an Apocalypse sized IW force, So I ignore FOC, lol. Spartans all the way.

Well you can take the land raider proteus and get the augury web to scout forward a squad of plasma or melta support squad into front cover and to get closer to your enemy. They provide a good LoS blocker to big shorty things that would generally obliterate said expensive glass hammer unit.

Plus -1 to reserves for your opponents flyers and such are fun trolling :D

I can't really think of why you would, unless you were just that starved for points.  They made the Spartan way too cheap.  1 hull point, 2 more lascannons, 15 more transport capacity, the option to take a flare shield, all for less than 50 points (flare shield and armored ceramite still extra, of course).

In my case its a preference/fluff thing. my nl force is based on the fact that they didnt get broken down after the heresey (no codex) so are still a legion. they therefore use all the old tech so iv gone for a spartan over a land raider as i feel it fits the fluff better.

i also think they look better as well. its just the price that let them down.

Hahaha. I'm doing world eaters, so focusing on troops not tanks;) I'm trying to figure if it's worth going for the 3 troops units and 2 transports or just taking troops exclusively with a couple of melta squads following behind and ignore flyers.

Mechanicum has access to some pretty nifty Land Raiders, but you're right as far as using the Heavy slot for Land Raiders over Spartans: not wise! Spartans are almost too powerful with the ability to nerf melta. As a guy who's going to run mainly flyers for my RG, I always look longingly at those beauties when browsing FW.com. EDIT: Especially the one on the site painted in XIX colors!!

The spartan tracks were a pain in the butt to put on too, they are still misaligned on mine :/

Lol I'm good now with resin, but my lord, that Spartan was an absolute pain to build

Cant agree enough! i actually had to snap 2 sections in half to get them on due to the fact they were badly deformed in relation to the track runners. not to mention the fact that due to fw decision to make the track unit/side hulls 1 complete unit the finished model weighs about 2/3 of a ton.

i stand by my decision though. it fits the fluff (i fully realize they used raiders during the crusade/heresy but still...) and the finished model looks (imo) very good and better then the various raiders.

i would like to use a fell blade as well but iv used codex csm so its a no go. still think the spartan over the raider for the reasons given though.

Massive ditto, i cut some bits off the tracks and sort of hid the gap underneath. I thought getting a Fell blade would be cool for my legion but can't face trying to stick one together.

Back on topic - If money was no object then yeah its Spartans all the way, but if you already have Land raiders, then you'd be a fool not to use them. I hope  to fill my Spartan with Rogal Dorn, Terminator captain and 10 Huscarls (assuming FW make them)
