Simple Green and FW Resin

Recommended Posts

HI had a little problem with my hazard environment guards and need a question answered before I paint them again.

I had to put them in simple green because even though I did have them soaking in soap and water the paint and primer wouldn't hold to the resin. I guess I should have scrubbed them with a soft brush but I missed that step. I knew this could happen so I'm not terribly upset over it.

My question is after bathing them in simple green, scrubbing the paint off with a soft brush, then soak them with soap and water will I have no issues with the mold release? I want to ask to make sure before I start painting them again.

Also was surprised at how bad I did. The plastic parts still have the army painter primer on them but the primer came right off the resin. First time that happened.

with forgeworld I tend toward the following preparation:

1) bathe (say 30mins to an hour or so) in DIET Coke...remember, this stuff is pretty good for cleaning things as well as drinking.  I find its really good for degreasing, which is why I do this

2) rinse with cool water

3) bathe in simple green (say 2-4 hours or so...but no problem if you go longer)

4) rinse with cool water and brush over with soft toothbrush

5) air dry (at least 24 hours just to be sure)

sure this process takes a bit of time, and sure the coke seems strange...but I rarely have a problem with primer not sticking afterwards.  the last time I did have a problem it was on the fire dragon in a deep recess.

now...   if you are having problems with primer or paint sticking to resin, even after following your normal/preferred preparation methods,  there is still a solution that doesn't require completely stripping and restarting your work.  simply take either your base color or a primer color (paint on or distilled from the spray can, it doesn't matter here) and mix the paint into white glue (Elmer's works great for this).  this gives you a combination that will stay where you paint it, will hold additional colors on top of it, and (unless you distilled paint from a can) is still water soluble.  really useful trick when working with the parts combinations we have too...plastic, resin, metal, the surface doesn't matter for this trick to help.

now all this being said, I feel I should also point out I tend to double prime my forgeworld pieces.  the first primer coat is always Mr. Resin Primer.  for some reason ive come to swear by this Japanese product whenever im working with resin models...no matter the subject.  once that layer is cured, then I go to the more standard colored primers...

I dip a toothbrush in Simple Green to scrub my minis with prior to priming. I've experienced what you described with the resin once, and I gave it a good scrubbing with Simple Green for several minutes and then the primer went on just fine. Sometimes that mold release agent is stubborn in coming off.

The latest podcast by the Independent Characters was all about Forgeworld models and how to clean and build them.  The chap they had on swears by the Mexican version of Simple Green called Purple Power (I Think) says it has a better cleaning product in it, but still fully biodegradable.
