Help me choose a legion (again...)

BROTHERS! I have a deep need to complete an army atleast once in my life and what better than an army from the best part of the warhammer universe: the 31st millenium. But Im at a loss between 3 legions (initially 4, but I always end up ruling out the Space Wolves because I just cant buy the vikings in space theme).

- Luna Wolves: An Ullanor Crusade themed army based around a company of my own desing with some units of Catulan Reavers and Justaerin with Abbadon in the front. The Luna Wolves are one of my favorite legions ever since I read Horus Rising, but painting an entire army white is quite scary as you might imagine, but nonetheless it would look amazing. It would be a mostly despoilers based army with tacticals giving and support units giving covering fire. Probably MK IV? But I think I would rather use MK III). This is not the heresy so thats also a bit of an issue, but it is the Great Crusade. Allies: Maybe BA, EC, NL, UL, WE or Imperial Army (and units of Mechanicum).

- Blood Angels: An Siege of Terra theme BA army, lots of mixed assault and tactical units (starting to see a pattern here...). Red is an easy and beautiful colour and I havent seen that many BA legions, but they are not top on my list. Pure Heresy army, so the corpses of the traitors might appear on some minis. Not sure if MK III or MK IV. Allies: IF, WS, Imperial Army and Mechanicum.

- Ultramarines: Another one of my favorite legions (in fact the XVI and the XIII are my top). I have finally perfected a good way of painting Ultramarines blue, gold is still an annoying colour but Im getting it and the "U" is easy to freehand. The theme would be Calth and/or Nuceria, so loads of WE and WB dead on the bases. MK III on all the minis if possible, maybe a few veterans and officers in other marks. Pure grimdark heresy. Allies: Imperial Army and Mechanicum.

Ive spent the last couple of months narrowing it down to these 3 legions and now Im at a complete loss. Will you, my brothers, give me your ideas so I can finally settle this problem and get on with the painting. For the Emperor!

Doing Blood Angels (Amit's 5th company is the bestest!) is really awesome. I've always wondered about doing an Angels wrath rite of war list for BAs because it seems to echo them so well.

2 or 3 big squads of assault marines, jetbike squads, and storm eagles streaming contrails just scream BA. Plus you get hit and run on your jump pack squads ;)

If you wanna be really cool, do a praetor either with a jump pack command squad or a jetbike command squad

I'm going to throw my vote in for Great Crusade era Luna Wolves. Maybe make yourself a Hastur Sejanus and some Glory Boys...

But seriously, I love Mk II armor and I'd really love to see some more great crusade era armies on here, I think it could look striking to paint up that new Horus model from forgeworld in Luna Wolves White.

O.O Sooooo the IX seems to be popular... Keep giving me ideas people, its still going to be a week or 2 before I order anything in from FW.

But with so many votes for the IX legion I must admit that I dont know much about their legion organization. I remember reading the legion was made up of 300 companies, each with their own captain, and according to Lexicanum the legion was numbering around 120000 (not counting the loses from fighting against the daemons), so that would meen 400 legionaries per company. So what more can you tell me about their organization?

Ha, welcome to my personal hell. I can't choose either

I love Blood Angels, they have the greatest of the Primarchs and the most tragic and compelling story throughout the heresy...

However, Blue and Gold man, Blue and Gold... always looks good when done right...

Why not make an allied force? Then you can have a bit of everything smile.png Don't lay down unnecessary limitations on yourself when you can have it all.

Sure I could add one of them as allies, but I just needed some help choosing which legion to start with. And that might just be the IX legion seeing how much support they are getting.

Well so fdar the IX seems to be it and I actually quite happy with that. It means I can add a lot of bitz from the BA range, I like the colour red and I have a good theme for them.

But if I were to say the Space Wolves, how many would support the VI?

Heres the deal: Being skandinavian and being really into my peoples pre-cristian traditions they have always seemed attractive and I did have a small army of them when I first started warhammer 40k. But my main problem with them has always been my lack of skill with greenstuff. I never liked GWs space wolf minis because they never lived up to the potential of the artwork and my own imagination. Also grey is a damn boring colour.
