Jolemai
I have some of this and I'm looking to make some simple discs of diameter 1 cm. This item linked is very similar to epoxy resin whereby one applies the resin to a hardener and when it goes off (I tend to leave it at room temperature for 24 hours, but it takes ca. 20 minutes at 60 °C) it forms a hard metal coverage. Think of it as sloppy metal green stuff :p If I wanted to make a disc, how would I go about it? What options make good molds? Play Doh? Polystyrene? Once I get the hang of this I plan to then make other shapes for 40k purposes. Thanks in advance :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/288200-help-with-some-simple-casting/ Share on other sites
stinkenheim
Green stuff of similar putty (not miliput) is good for press moulds as it's sturdy but also flexible enough for getting pieces out. You can get some silicon which is a two part mix like the epoxy resin, although you will need to make a container for it. Easiest thing to use for that is lego. As it's a simple shape, and presumably not too large, GS is probably the easiest option IMO Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/288200-help-with-some-simple-casting/#findComment-3624333 Share on other sites
Durus
There are also Silicone Putties so you can avoid the form building issue, if you don't want to get into that. Silicone Putties are usually used for dental impressions They only take a short time to cure as well. If you want to go with GS, as that is also pretty useful for sculpting, you should look for Kneadite instead buying the GW repackaged stuff. It will be cheaper but it's the same product. JeffTibbetts
I've used silicone putty for push molds and resin molds as well. I got this stuff at Michaels and it's super easy to work with. Not great for casting with a two part mold, but for simple push molds or one-sided pour molds, I would try it. It's cheapish and the stuff I got seems like it will last a long time. Cures in minutes to a rubbery, not too dense material. For larger push molds it doesn't have enough substance to keep it's shape, but for small stuff and pouring resin it's great.
