Help me decide! PLEASE! Imperial Fists or Salamanders

Since this is going to be an expensive and time consuming commitment and given you are attracted to the fluff of both Legions (so they tie on that front) it will be worth following Grotsmasha's suggestion: paint a test mini for each and mentally multiply this by 100x. Do you think you'll be able to keep up?

Yellow can be a challenging color - even without special markings and decorations... Sallies have an easier basic scheme (imo) but virtually every mini have the potential to be adorned with flames/scales etc. So try doing two minis painted up to the best of your ability. After that you'll have a good idea of the effort required to build an entire army.

My 2c

Here's my thing. If you are going to spend upwards of $1000s of dollars on something, do it because you love it, not because X amount of people are or aren't. Your army will be unique because you made it. I'm doing a Dark Angels army because I'm drawn to the story and love the tragedy. Not because there are tons of people doing it out not ding it

Bingo. If you're really serious about this, then you need to accept now that it will be a labor of love. Not only money will be devoured by this project, but time, sweat, blood, and quite possibly sanity.

The Legion you choose must be the Legion closest to your heart, not just the ice cream flavor of the month.

This and this. Too much personnal time, effort and money to care about fashion. The coin trick is good btw.

I can attest to the above statements because I struggled with choosing a Legion when I jumped ship to 30k. Like a lot of people, I'd love to collect 4 or 5 different armies, but even if I had the money to do so, I work so slowly, I certainly don't have the time for it. My first choice was the V Legion(White Scars) but I settled on VIII(Night Lords) for a number of reasons. If you stroll through the WIP and Hall of Honor, you'll see a ton of Night Lord armies underway, and quite a few of them are very good. That alone made it a tough choice to go with because there were already a lot of them out there and I'd be standing in some pretty big shadows, but the VIII Legion, not the Night Lords, really spoke to me. There's so many different paths to take with an army in the Heresy timeline that 20 different modelers could all be doing the same Legion, and not of them would look the same.

Take some time, look over the rules for both once the 3rd book comes out, build a couple of figures for each, and listen very carefully. One of them will speak to you.

*edit* Man, 2 posts went up while I was typing and never saw the notification. sad.png

Yellow can be a bear to paint, I know from previous Imperial Fists, but I have to say, I really like the all-metal and yellow accent scheme from the new Extermination video:

Just do what you feel is natural.

I went to the XIIth but now I find it hard to return.

Don't forget it's more then just a flavour or a power game.

It's your heart and soul.

That's why I'm always building different heresy era forces.

My love isn't for one legion but the Horus heresy itself

Like others have already pointed out, yellow isn't an easy color to paint. But if you are set on Imperial Fists, more power to you - check out templarcrusade01's channel for some painting tips on IFs.

Salamanders are easier to paint and can be customized with flames/scales to your heart's content. However, Forge World has said that Salamanders are the least popular legion right now. They haven't gotten much love from Forge World so far, but that could change in the future.

Why not have a IF primary detachment with Salamander allies?

Alternatively, there is always the XII Legion. Now, where have I placed my spare set of Butcher's Nails... :D

They are also the legion that has the least attention so far, so of course it's not going to seem like many like them, maybe if we had a character, contemptor or unit people would like it, as it all there is for Salamander players is the shoudler pads... which whilst lovely, are not going to get people as excited about as a model or head set.

Option A or option B?

Why, option C, of course!

My way out of this dilemna was to choose another faction of which only one subfaction interested me. That would be the sisters of battle from the Order of Our Martyred Lady. No plastics though, so I've only painted rhino chassis vehicles.

Just wanted to mention that the upgrade kits for Salamanders are in the tubes but appears not to be done just yet. One head was shown in their own blog.

And to you Captain Angel, much tips have already been said but another way to decide can be to turn to Black Library. Audiobooks and novels can greatly inspire you into right track.

To be honest, if you have to debate this much - then the answer is simple - neither of them, you seem to choose on a few cool factors instead of what will hold you most in this expensive hobby (30k more so than 40k).

If you haven't set your mind already, then it will probably change the moment you become interested in one and then read about another.

My best recommendation at this point would be to eliminate all the legions that you really do not want to do.  Then, absolutely, read the Index Astartes for the rest of the legions.  If you cannot find yourself immersed in the Index Astartes article of the legion you choose, you will not love them nearly as much.

I found myself reading the Death Guard IA and loved it, instantly.  I haven't wavered since.  I have, however, grown to like other legions since, but nothing as strong as the DG.

Instant decisions are easily regrettable, take a moment out, go on the wiki pages (there are several wiki's, warhammer40k.wikia is a good option, and often has a lot of the information that exists in the IA articles), read something about all the legions that interest you, and let the one that moves you most take you.

Special characters, models, looks, paint colours, are all things that can help aid you, but you can modify all of these things.  But the legacy of the legion you choose and what they do is what will follow your army regardless.

If you are going to spend upwards of $1000s of dollars on something, do it because you love it, not because X amount of people are or aren't.

It's rather convenient for me that one of my favourite Legions, the first army I ever did, and one of the most under-used Legions (yes, i'm a Massive Hipster, sue me) all coincide, then.
