BRB, book 1, book 2, book 3? I'm confused!

Hi all,

I'm wanting to explore The Horus Heresy army but have no idea where to start (apart from my Fire Raptor)

I have the BRB for the 6th and know this contains the core....but where do I get the equivalent of a codex? Where do I find out about the different squad types and vehicles?

As the books are £70 each, naturally I don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong thing!

Cheers in advance

HH book one betrayal has the rules for most of the base Legion units, most all the gun rules and equipment, plus a few of the first four legions.

The second book massacre, contains a few standard unit rules (Sicaran, contemptor mortis for example), and some legion units and rules for the first 8 legions (so a few more of the first four, and introduces the second four).

Yes, you need the 6th ed BRB.

Getting Betrayal is where it's at, as well as the 6th ed BRB.  Beyond that, it's more about legion rules/units and, sadly, the two I mentioned above which are kinda liked by lots of people.

To be honest, once you've bought one you'll want the rest. The quality on these books is so far above that of a codex it's a joke really. These things are easily worth 4-5 codices, so £70 is a bargain.

Betrayal has the actual Age of Darkness (basic Legion) army list and also the rules, units/ characters for the World Eaters, Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children and Death Guard.

Massacre has further generic units along with the rules characters for the Iron Hands, Night Lords, Salamanders and Word Bearers plus further units for each of the Legions listed above.

Extinction will focus on the Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors, Raven Guard and Alpha Legion but it's yet to be confirmed whether the 8 Legions from previous books will get anything at all but expect some more generic units such as the Fire Raptor and Sicaran Venator.

I suppose the bare minimum you'll need is Betrayal so you can get the list and the rest will depend on what Legion you're actually going to play. There's been a few threads dedicated to the decision of which Legion to take on but I'll repeat the most salient point from them: do some serious homework/research about which Legion you want because the monetary cost alone in taking on a project like this is enormous.

For what it's worth, I was of the opinion that I only wanted books that had goodies for my own Legion, now I'm going to buy them all on release

As above - As far as rule books go... I would say that they are everything you'd want from an all encompassing legion / Space Marine book.  Apart from not being able to fit everything in of course... they are how rule books should look and feel, and are full of flavour.

If you're going to play it and enjoy reading and fluff, totally worth it.
