thade
Some day, I'm sure, someone will come up with a real reason to use heavy bolters... but I haven't heard one yet. If we're just talking heavy bolters, I actually take them all the time on my marines; they're very often in my tactical squads when I cap out at 10 and want a heavy weapon. They stand a better chance at wounding on a snapfire than any other heavy, and my tac squads are meant to move. (I have designated heavy weapons teams that take my rocket launchers and lascannons.) The "meant to move" is the important part; if my tac squads are engaging, they're within rapid fire range and thus able (and usually willing) to charge or be charged, so they're packing a power fist for AV. (And, you know, marine fingers are pretty good at anti-Rhino when it comes down to it.) I wouldn't mount them to a vehicle, I don't think. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/288496-the-second-leg-of-the-sisters-weapons-melta/page/2/#findComment-3636038 Share on other sites
*Furyou Miko
Oh, no, heavy bolters are good on infantry as support weapons, I specifically meant on Immolators, lol. WarriorFish
I think they look good... :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/288496-the-second-leg-of-the-sisters-weapons-melta/page/2/#findComment-3636083 Share on other sites
Rasp
I liked heavy bolter immolators when they could reroll to wound. I'm sure it helped that back then, it was free for bolter side grade. Gothical
I have been wondering about Immolators actually, mostly for my quad-Melta Dominions. It seems that either the Multi-Melta or the Heavy Flamer are just better complementary weapons for the Sisters' arsenal (and particularly Dominions). Somewhat ironically, Space Marine players would rather have the Heavy Bolters on a 55 point Razorback than the Heavy Flamer (which seems odd to me, given that a Marine unit is more likely to want to be in combat than a Sister unit). In a way, I can see a point to a 65pt Immolator with Heavy Bolters and a Storm Bolter as a support tank for back-field objective-grabbing units...but then again I would rather have the Multi-Melta to scare tanks and monstrous creatures away (although come to think of it, they might be useful against Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau and Orks, all of whom have medium troops that can engage at long ranges and fast, light vehicles to avoid foot/Rhino squads). march10k
Most of the preferences expressed online assume that you're playing against MEQs...but these days, there's a ton of tau and eldar being played, and IG is about to drop, so AP4 just might be the new sexy... *Furyou Miko
They haven't really caught on in my area. Non-MEq I mean. Might be why I do so well with my Sisters... The thing is, heavy bolters provide stand-off firepower in an army that works best in the 2-8" range bracket. It's hard finding a situation where leaving a vehicle at the back of the table is advantageous when the rest of the army is in the enemy's face dealing more damage. march10k
Well...with stormtroopers and IG being fresh codexes, and stormtroopers being available as a discreet ally choice that may not even take up the ally slot...I think your opportunities to employ some AP4 may increase in the near future...of course, heavy flamers are AP4, too... Duke Danse Macabre
To be honest, I am fighting so much Eldar and dark eldar it isn't even funny. I have far to much melta for what I am facing and it feels like such a waste, maybe the days of space marines being the meta are gone?... Nah. Still far to much power armour out there to think that. march10k
Yeah, tau and eldar are big in my area, mainly because they're OP...and IG will get the bandwagoneers to set aside their marines for a while...Orks come out this Summer, I hear...Hooray for a less-MEQ-y meta!! Parn
Reading this thread definitely got me thinking of how to work HBs into a list. I've been thinking on and off about rolling with a command squad with 4 heavy bolters, to emulate the old Retributor looks since they take a heavy back seat to exorcists now. Given that rending on Rets is once per game, or twice if lucky and dropping the points, I think the extra home field camping squad has some merit. I am looking to give the command squad a whirl. Another possible use for HBs is for Immolator spam lists that use them on their troops rides. Given that the melta-minions are so strong, perhaps the extra dakka coming up the field will help thin the lines a bit better than single-shot melta (especially against the non-MEQ lists. So for multi-meltas... no love for them. They are Immolator ornamentation. Meltaguns are vastly superior for the foot troops. Perhaps if retributors act of faith did something spiffy like skyfire/relentless... then maybe you'd see more heavy support variation, and more girls with multimeltas and heavy bolters. As for stormbolters... make them an unlimited upgrade for basic squads and maybe we'll find a use for them... Oh, and hi! My first post out here! Long time viewer, though!
