Painting the 18 different legions

While I sit endlessly going around in circles trying to decide on a legion, one thing I am trying to consider is how good they will look when painted. Which made me think, how would you rank the 18 legions in order of most difficult to get the colour scheme right to the easiest?

I ask because I am potentially returning to the hobby after over ten years away from modelling and painting. I probably don't want to pick a legion that will be too tricky to paint. Aren't yellow and white schemes often hardest? All thoughts much appreciated.

I find yellow and white the most difficult to paint.

Right now I am working on my VI legion force. I am painting them (storm) grey with brass/gold trims. Not sure if they are easy or medium in difficulty, but I have found a way where I can paint then fairly quickly and get a result I am satisfied with.

I believe Death Guard are quite difficult. I would find their paint scheme tricky. Same with the World Eaters and all their blood smeared white.

So those that have colours like yellow and white I would consider difficult while those Legions with a black (Iron Hands) or Iron (Iron Wariors) paint scheme I would find easy.

But in the end it comes down to how you paint and what you prefer. If you love painting yellow, then you paint it a lot and become good at it and dosen't find it as hard compared to me that always try to avoid yellow.

I collected SWs back in the day so I know I can do grey decently. Legions currently being considered:

Alphas (I love the scheme on the tartaros terminators on the forge world site)

Sallies

Wolves

Iron Hands

Iron Warriors

Ultramarines

Night Lords

White Scars (I fear doing white though!)

My suggestion would be feel the Legion you want to do. Don't think to much about the difficulty of the paint scheme. If it is a Legion you like and really dig then you will eventually become good at painting them.

So go with what your gut tells you. If you have read the Black Library's Horus Heresy series and the HH books from FW, then I guess you either have made your mind about which Legion you prefer, or you are in the camp so many others are in and just want to collect them all. (cue pokemon theme).

As a World Eater, I can tell you that white (or at least the blood-smeared, dusty white typical on World Eaters) isn't as difficult to accomplish as you might think. It all depends on the type of wash you use, how much of it you use, and in what way you apply it.

Now, to paint a pristine white that has some depth to it - that is very difficult. Same with the Death Guard white - expect to use lots of weathering/rust effects.
