Exalted Flamers on Foot?

I picked up White Dwarf #7 when I heard that GW was coming out with rules for fielding that Exalted Flamer that you don't use when you build the Burning Chariot with Herald, mounting it on a 40mm base. For the cost of 5.5+ Pink Horrors one has an independent character that takes a Herald slot that's on "foot" and  still has the ability to use it's Pink and Blue Flames of Tzeench.

I have yet to see it discussed here (til now), so I was wondering if it would be a useful thing to add to an army? Cheap "suicide" unit to deep strike in and get rid of that annoying vehicle or unit? Go with a unit of Pink Horrors for anti-tank support?

Also, do I need to buy the actual "data slate" to play with the above, or can I use the entries given in the print magazine?

You can use the rules given in the magazine, as they're completely legal. However, the exalted flamer is even more useless on foot than on a chariot. It can only fire snapshots when it moves, so it can deep strike and die, move around and die, sit there and die, or join a unit and do nothing.

Far better to take tzeentch heralds. Even furies are more useful than the exalted flamer.

It's worth noting that the "data slate" you'd buy off of the BL website is actually the digital copy of said White Dwarf. So the magazine really is all you need.

Is it really that bad in 40k? It's revolutionary in Fantasy. Every Daemon player I've seen has completely reworked their list to fit in one if not two.

Yeah, without relentless this unit is useless. I don't know what the thought behind this was....

As I mentioned above, the thought was to allow  the use those Exalted Flamers one would have laying around from building the chariot with Herald, and yeah, not having relentless and only going 6" a turn really hurts it... only real use would be to man the gun behind a defense line til the enemy gets within range of it's own ranged attacks, or "hid" it somewhere and wait for the enemy to close....

It has two weapons, and both are Heavy. They're 18", and it can only move 6". One is a template, even. It has a bad save and no toughness to counter it.

It's so absolutely useless, it's considered the worst possible unit in the entirety of Warhammer 40,000.

Pyrovores are still worse (unless you get creative with the rules wording on their exploding rule).

The pedestrian Exalted Flamer isn't so bad if you're able to cast Endurance on him.
