painting after clearcoating a model

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody. So I just recently finished up my imperial knight and ran into some problems with the final step. As you can imagine this model has a lot of shiny metallic in the armor trim and metal legs but when I hit my model with my anti-shine clearcoat from army painter it really took the shine out of my shining gold trim pieces and boltgun metal machinery.

My question is this, how can I return the sparkle to my metallic areas? I was thinking of just going over the trim with another layer shining gold but is this kosher? I've also heard some rumblings about paint on gloss varnish from any art supply store, would this work better?

Using gloss varnish will add shine, but it won't be a metallic shine, more a plastic shine.

Metallic medium may bring the shimmer back though, you can get the vallejo one quite cheaply providing you can find a stockist. You may also be able to use artists metallic medium.

This just an idea though.
