HQ base size question

I've been using 30mm for my HQ's of late, works a treat on Power Armoured figs - I got mine from Heresy miniatures, Adds enough space to add scenic elements but isn't (for want of a better phrase) as out of scale as a 40mm.

What's the general view of non TDA marine HQ models mounted on 40mm bases?

It depends on wherre you play.  I have seen people obsess over "the base the model is supplied with" to the point that metal terminators should be on 25mm and plastic ones on 40mm.

For me personally, I don't care.  40mm makes the model stand out as a special unit. Most of the time the pros and cons of going up a base size cancel each other out.  As long as the HQ in question does not have a special rule that would be affected by the base size -- like nova powers or something that hits all models in base contact -- I don't see a problem.  But that's me.  Other people will feel differently.

I have all my ICs on 40mm bases - it didn't matter when I started, and, as already stated, it makes your IC stand out and gives room for scenery.

Just in case I come across a 'tight a**e that gets upset about the base size, I carry spare scenic bases that can be swapped into combat etc to replace the ICs when required. So far no one has quibbled at this.

Seleucus brings a good point. If your opponent is concerned about modeling for advantage, it's always worth it to carry some extra empty bases around. The "appropriate" size will be good for things like seeing how many models you're in base contact with, especially when two enemy models have weapon poses that bump and keep them farther apart then they might otherwise be.
