armour marks.

Check out the ForgeWorld open day pics to see Gorgon Terminator models coming soon. I believe they wear early Indomitus pattern (what use to simply be "Terminator armour" until FW introduced Cataphractii and the other one whose name eludes me at this moment).

*Mk II likely being phased out, especially seeing as MK III is effectively a modified pattern

*Mk III is most common

*I'd imagine Mk IV was favored by specialists like assault marines, pilots, recon etc. due to its enhanced manouvreability

*Cataphractii was designed by Ferrus, so I'd imagine it saw widespread use - although the leather pteruges are generally replaced with chainmail

*Tartaros was used also - probably more likely with assault termis - again, for its enhanced manouvreability

*Gorgon pattern was probably mainly used by the Morlocks, but may have been worn by the elite of Clans other than the Avernii

Basically, they'd have used each for appropriate roles - and the individual attitude of each Clan, which were basically sub-Legions in their own rights, would have probably had an impact.

Basically, you can have any type as long as you justify it. Maybe lots of Mk II if the Clan had suffered heavy losses and had to fall back on its reserve armories? Maybe they've fallen out of favor with the Gogon, so have seen depleted stocks of newer equipment? Maybe the Clan's Forge is mainly Terran Astartes, who are adept at producing modified Mk II plate of artificer quality?

Do what ya like, basically :P

I believe MkII was generally preferred over MkIII, III offered greater protection to the front and therefore was used by siege units etc but MkII was considered more comfortable for prolonged periods of time.

In the 31st Millenium there is only Health and Safety at Work.

Mk 3 actually has a worse armour rating on the back (source: deathwatch, rites of battle)

Hence being favoured by tunnel-fighters and breaching units. Armour to the fore and all that. ;)

If it were up to me, everyone would get mk4 armour, not just the vets. (Actually, I've got an army on the go - so it is up to me! )

I was always thought the Mk.III fit the Iron Hands persona the best, that whole "can't kill me, bro!" vibe that comes through the Inviolable Armor, FNP, and IWND rules.  That being said, IA9 also points out that the Iron Hands in 40K are one of the few Chapters still capable of mass-producing Mk.IV armor, which may suggest that they have Mk.IV production capabilities in 30K as well.

As for Terminator suits, the Visions of Heresy artwork shows off Iron Hands in Cataphractii armor -- see my signature image -- and I'll be using that for my Praetor and his command squad.  But the Gorgon-pattern rules are awesome and I like most of what I saw of the model WIPs (the overlapping-plate pauldrons and extensive cog-work is great, but I can't say I'm a fan of the Mk.VII-ish helmets), so I'm going to take a squad of Gorgons as well.
