IS the GW bases kit worth it?

Recommended Posts

Not really. Only stuff I've used is the slate. Better off looking at the Vallejo range of pastes like the Grey Pumice or using milliput to build the base up a bit and add your own details. You can use free stuff too like stones, sand, and real mud (dry and glued).

Some good tutorials here:

http://tutofig.com/scenery-terrain/display-bases/

The kit does well for special characters but not so hot for the rest of the army. The brass stuff is cool but It does not fit with any of my armies to date.  I may do an industrial ruins look some day but I will need a lot more than the bits in this kit.

I find the resin base toppers to be too clutered for anything but the largest basses; like dreadnaught bases and up.  If you get a look at what the resin pieces are you will see what many people have a box full of already.  I have more helms, weapons and leftover icons for marines, BT, CSM, DA and others that I could add bits to every model I have.

The slate and sand/gravel are nice.  However you can save yourself some money and buy this from anywhere that sells model trains.  You can get fine sand in the kids craft section for 2€ or less that will last you a life time.  There is also a cool tutorial on this site about using garden mulch as slate for basing.  In a nut shell, a few pieces of bark mulch dried well and broken up looks just like slate when painted.

So is it worth "it"?  No.  You either already have everything you need in a box on your paint desk or you can get 5 times as much for 1/5 the price at most hobby stores.

I've used a couple of bits (all as part of second-hand aquisitions) for character pieces as suggested, but would be expensive to base the whole army. I've got a selection of different types/sizes of gravel, some sand, flock and cork ready to do all of mine from scratch as and when - and with a couple of texture paints, you'll be sorted! You'll be able to get a lot more for a lot cheaper - and it'll go further.

Alright, thanks brothers. I always used some fine sand I found on the beach in my hometown in Denmark, I have been using it for 3 or 4 years and its perfect for sand and gravell, but I need some more theme to my bases. What would you recommend for a 13th Black Crusade themed Blood Angels army?

Slate is crazy easy to get your hands on. You can probably find some in a Garden with gravel, at the beach or at any place that sells construction supplies.

I took a little block from when i used to fit fireplaces, smashed it with a hammer (wore goggles, ofc lol) and ive still got a buttload of it left.

Also, you can cut up sprues with clippers to get some cool looking rubble. Or just keep the bits of flash etc you scrape off mini's. Its what i do.

If you need stuff like Chaos helmets, or Ork weapons etc to show your marines are battling a certain foe; go on ebay and buy the ugliest most messed up models you can find. They'll be really cheap, then just cut them up and use them on your bases. Loss of detail is no problem for base decorations. They'll be half covered in sand anyway. :)

Weapons, helmets and other military gear.  Canteens, sand bags and lots of empty ammo casings.  To make the weapons sink down in the mud, sand them down on one side about halfway.  You can clip, file and sand down helment so they are  partially to mostly buried.  You can even use arms sanded most of the way down so it looks like a body would be buried underneath.

Excess amounts of green stuff popped onto bases in small mounds can add great effect to. Sinking off cuts and bitz into this is nice also.

The basing kit is just "ok"....I find it generally comes with only 3 bases that you will love and want to use....frankly there are better bases out there from the like of www.tinyworlds.co.uk etc etc :)

As to not start a new topic: (also, Im sorry that I keep bringing up stuff tongue.png ) Im battling between making a BA force or a Guardians for the Covenant force, I like both a lot. I found that The Army Painter has 2 metallic sprays for priming which would be good for the GotC but which one do you think would be better, the Plate Mail metal or Gun metal, what Im interested in is a look of polished steel but still dark.

EDIT: Grammar.

Depends if you'd rather highlight up from dark, or use a wash on a lighter colour.

Both have advantages. Look forward to seeing either! smile.png

well, Im not really sure whats best to get a kind of steel look to the armour. Kind of like this image (which served as inspiration):

It'd really depend on your painting style mate...

I would guess the brighter spray would be better. The Guardians look to be very shiny compared to say Iron Warriors. A light spray, with a wash would be easier to get brighter. It'd take more work to get a darker colour up to the ''polished'' look. :)
