Astartes Abroad Program

Brothers...

Recently this question popped up in my mind - was the whole "seconded to another legion for a number of years to learn their ways" practice widespread during the Great Crusade? I have read somewhere that the Thousand Sons practiced this, one of their legionaries even spending a few years with the Space Wolves.

I'm writing some custom fluff for my World Eaters and I've been entertaining the thought of giving my Centurion the background of having spent a decade embedded with the Iron Warriors, thus explaining his preference for a more balanced approached to warfare (as in making liberal use of armor to support infantry) than his brother-officers with their KILLMAIMBURN methodology.

Besides, Astartes Abroad Program sounds just fun. Imagine a Death Guard stuck with the Space Wolves and finding their Fenrisian Ale having no effects on a Son of Mortarion... :D

I wouldn't be surprised if it was something that was a regular practice. I believe the reference to the Thousand Sons doing it came from Battle for the Abyss. I could be wrong but I seem to recall it coming from that work. And factor that could be circumstantial evidence is the Crusader Host in the Outcast Dead - a multitude of representatives, from various legions, all on Terra at the same time.

If this is the leaping off point for a character you created, then yeah, sure, go for it. Seems plausible enough. ^_^

The inspiration for this idea came along when I was reading the ally matrix from Betrayal. The only legion that the World Eaters got along great with was the Iron Warriors. I can actually see this, since both Angron and Perturabo were insular, brooding, and shunned their brothers.

When I was reading Betrayer (by the great and powerful A D-B), there were mentions that the fighting pits of the XII Legion were open to worthy legionaries from other legions as well, with Sigismund pairing with Delvarus and Amit pairing with Kargos.

As for the Butcher's Nails, not all members of the XII Legion had them. Even the decision of who was sent down to die on Isstvan III was not based who had Butcher's Nails or not. I'm writing my Centurion to be the only captain of the World Eaters without the Nails. That his men (the assault squads in particular) were frothing madmen would serve as a great foil.

The only sane man trying to mold a company of maniacs into something resembling a cohesive fighting force, achieving something resembling success only in time for his legion to go "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE" sounds like a great tragedy to me.

Will your character have been Terran born ?  More likely to have a kinship with the Iron Warriors above and beyond the basic 'astartes abroad' programme.  It might also explain the lack of butchers nails despite being a captain, not fully adjusting to Angron's doctrine.

I like the idea, I'm also toying with several ways to integrate some Iron Hands in with my Death Guard, so it's good to read other view points.

And I definitely need to catch up on my HH novels to get to Betrayer!
