Painting the Crimson Slaughter with Citadel Paints

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm working on painting a Crimson Slaughter force and am wondering if anyone knows any good guides or logs that will help point me in the right direction? I've seen a few, but another requirement is that the Citadel paints are used. Specifically, I'm trying to paint them up the 'Eavy Metal way. I see that there is a guide available from GW, but it is only available for Apple products and I do not own Apple products. Has anyone ever seen someone create a tutorial out of GW's tutorial for painting the Crimson Slaughter? I've seen a few great ones here, but I only have access to GW paints. And to even more specific, I'm wondering how to get the crimson armor color, the blue used on Kranon's sword, and the blue for cloaks and tabbards. Thanks in advance!

Also, I've done a few searches, but I've been out of the hobby for a while and, as I slowly reaquaint myself, am forgetting all my old haunt spots for paiting guides and tutorials. This seems like the best place to start the search...

While i've not put together a guide myself (im using the GW ipad document) i've just finished a unit of Crimson Slaughter Possessed that might be able to help, the wip pictures give a good idea of the colour stages. Happy to answer any questions on the scheme.

Thanks for replying, Midian! Your Crimson Slaughter Possessed look wonderful, your Death Guard are gorgeous (if such a thing can be said of those blighted by Nurgle), and the Black Legion Chosen are awesome!

I am def interested in the stages of the red armor. I think I've got the flesh tone stages and bronze trim down, it's just the red armor I'm stuck on. I've done a few tests myself and am just not happy with any of them yet. So any hints or tips you can share would be great! And I don't need anything in depth, just the basic colors you used. Also, do you use a medium to thin your paints or do you use water?

The red armour is pretty easy to be honest -

  • Basecoat with Mephiston Red
  • Wash Agrax Earthshade
  • Layer with Mephiston Red avoiding the recesses and darker areas.
  • Edge Highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet.
  • Even finer edge highlight with Wild Rider Red.

There's no fancy tricks, with red it's all about being patient.

Oddly enough I do use a thinning medium with my paints - I use a 15% to 85% mix of Flow Improver to water that I mix in a large batch before decanting it into a smaller dropper bottle for everyday use, the dropper bottle gives me more control on how much water im adding to the paint.

Thanks for the breakdown, Midian! Tested it out and it's working great - exactly what I was working toward.

Another question - and a long shot - any chance I can get you to list the colors used in the Tutorial? Just for the cloak and power sword on the Kranon example? I have no trouble with how it's painted, just the colors used. I know that's asking a lot :p Again, appreciate your input here!

Also, what ratio do you use when adding your medium solution to your paint?

The cloak in the GW walkthrough was just done black, highlighted with Skavenblight Dirge and Stormvermin Fur, though the cloak details were done in the same blue as the sword detail.

The blue on the sword was done as follows -

  • Caledor Blue basecoat
  • 1st highlight Teclis Blue
  • 2nd highlight Lothern Blue
  • 3rd highlight Palid Wych Flesh

The normal ratio I work at when thinning paints is normally around 1: paint:water depending on the colour or brand. GW base paints for example might get more water in for example. Have a play about with different ratios of paint to water and find out what you prefer - I know some people who only ever paint out of the pot, but also Golden Demon winners who think nothing of watering down a paint until it's barely there.

Right on - that's exactly what I needed. Thanks again, Midian!

It takes a few coats, but watering the paint down to the levels you suggest looks great. Gets rid of that chalky look I was getting adding only a little water. I don't have much experience using mediums, but Lahmian Medium works great. I've thinned it down with a water/medium mix and it basically looks like a thicker wash and takes three coats to get solid coverage, but it looks much better than painting out of the pot.
