Painting the Praetorian Marines 5th Company

Hello fellow wargamers,

I first got into the hobby just under 2 years ago, and since then I have collected 3 sizeable 40k armies, and have pretty much played at least one game a week. I'm still enjoying it very much, but I am ashamed to say that as a gamer first and foremost, as well as lacking time/energy to devote to it, my painted model collection is sparse and haphazard.

I have grown fed-up with this fact, and as such I've decided to split up my Space Marine collection into several groups, painting all the models I have for a particular company at a time (Please note that I will not be painting an entire company of space marines, rather that I will be completeing the models assigned to a company before moving onto the next lot.)

So first up, I decided to try and get my 5th Company of my roman inspired DIY chapter painted up.

The Praetorian chapter (as a DIY) do not follow the usual division of forces in the codex astartes, working instead as individual specialist companies focusing on one aspect of warfare. The 5th company is the one that holds the main Tactical Squads (or Legionaries).

So at the moment, here is what I have:

5th Company:

This is the second-largest of all the companies within the Praetorian’s ranks and is made up of Legionaries and their armoured transports, the Testudo and the Echinus. Around 120 Space Marines make up the squads that see more action then any other company in the chapter. The current captain: Savaline Lui, is somewhat new to the role, though he has proven himself capable thus far, and inspires loyalty in those who serve under him.

All very messy! as most of my models are second hand there's a load painted in different ways. I will be stripping them of paint and reassigning them to the ranks of the Praetorians! tongue.png

The things that might slow me down are the simple facts that:

A. I'm a slow painter at the best of times.

B. Even though I'm not that good, I must put my full effort into each model.

B. I decided when I started that white was a good idea for a colour scheme.

So what I have above is 3 Tactical squads aka. Legionary Squads, 3 Rhinos aka. Testudos, a unit of Centurions (currently in the process of magnetising their weapons options) and a command squad.

The specific models present may change around whilst I choose what weapon loadouts to paint up, but the numbers will stay the same.

I am creating this thread primarily to serve as my own motivation in completing these models, through sharing my progress with the larger community and hopefully getting some feedback here and there. By doing this it also helps to show just how many unpainted/incomplete models I actually have, and thus prevent me from buying more! Only by sharing the sorry state of affairs will the Praetorians ever be truly complete.

So let's get into it:

1st Legionary Squad:

Led by Veteran Sergeant Darnis, the 1st Legionary squad is made up of some of the finest warriors in the company. Many individuals within the chapter's 1st Company once served within this squad at some time or other. Darnis himself has quite an easy-going attitude, ever one to quip whilst under fire or make light-hearted comments at his squads expense.

This squad was some of the first models I ever painted, in fact if you look at the top-middle you can see the literal first Praetorian I made, though I'd like to think with the exception of him, the rest of the squad has held up okay, so long as you don't look too closely. tongue.png

I've pretty much used these guys in every game since, but I really need to get another squad made up, so that's what is coming next!

If you want to know more about my DIY chapter and their weird quirks, you can check out my blog: Praetorian Marines

Thanks for looking!

Very nice start - white is pretty difficult to paint with, from what I can see yours is looking good - great freehand on the rhino too!

Just a note re. your first squad's weapon load-out; in my opinion flamer and lascannon aren't best suited, as the former needs short range to be effective and the latter long range and no movement - could maybe think of combining lascannon with plasma gun and flamer with heavy bolter, for example... that's just my thoughts mind you!

Look forward to seeing more!

Same here. A very demanding paint scheme and you're doing a great job with it!

Are the shoulder pads freehand too? blink.png

Thanks Semper!

In hindsight i probably should have gone with a different colour 2 years ago, but I really like the end result even though it takes forever to paint :p

The numerals are transfers but everything else is freehand, which results in some of these horses looking more like dogs or blobs. The logo is something I have gotten a lot better at painting by now though!

Thanks T0MMY :)

Squad loadout happened in 5th when a Lascannon was only 10 points. Now the squad is cheaper overall for the same thing, but I can still combat squad them when needed. Loadout for the other squads is definately going to include another flamer and a melta, I just haven't decided on the heavy weapons to paint up yet. Maybe more Lascannons or a plasma cannon and missile launcher :p

So here is a little update on what I've been doing:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p45/quistis333/20140403_160154_zpsbbbed63f.jpg

finished magnetising the Centurions and undercoating them, aswell as a couple of other models. I'm also in the process of stripping the paint from some of the second-hand models, though they need a second go under the fairy power spray because it turns out that some have been painted over 3 times! :p

In the meantime I have started painting some of the bolter tacticals, just doing the flats as you can see above. I have a couple of hours tonight in which I hope to finish them off, and then I can move onto the shading.

I'm painting 5 at a time, because I find that I get very bored if I do any more then that at once, and also I get to see the finished results faster and use the models quicker in games. I'm also using my super-quick painting method, which skips a lot of steps early on but should hopefully make them come out okay.

Question:

So that's it on the painting for now, but I've been thinking about how I'm going to make Captain Savaline Lui... I want him to be a shooty-orientated captain but I'm wondering if it might be worth it/more fitting to create a counts-as Sicarius. Has anyone had any experience playing him? I'm looking for suggestions on this part!

Cool to see you posting your Praetorians liked the Pegasus Story.

:O You mean someone actually read that?

That story was a whole plan I had that got messed up overnight, when GW retconned the Storm-Raven into being a part of every chapter's armoury. :p

I want to finish it someday, but it means coming up with a completely new storyline...

here is today's update, nothing particularly special, just done all the shading :p

Next is highlighting and layering the white, but it'll have to wait until after the weekend because I'm booked up!

Metallics all done!  highlighted and so forth.  Just got in a shipment of new paints so I can carry on with this project.  Next up is the white, then to tidy up the blacks and do the tiny details here and there.  With the bald guy I drybrushed his scalp to give him a shaved-hair look.

More updates coming soon :)
