Plague Angel
After spontaneously having very similar conversations with several different people recently, I got to thinking about the cultural influences on the various GW chapters and armies, and how that's been used for non-GW chapters like the Storm Wardens. I found myself wondering which cultures I hadn't seen used before, and I thought of Polynesia and how I could bring a touch of that to my models. I started thinking about the Hawai'ian plumes associated with leaders like Kamehameha I. http://herbkanehawaii.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Herb-Kane_King-Kamehameha-at-Kailua.jpg http://www.full-circle.org/hawaii/artslit/hiart/images/helmet2.jpg The crest could look pretty good on Sergeants and the like, I think. It's not too different from the Roman or Spartan style plumes I've seen people use on their marines before. I'm just wondering how to go about doing it. The most obvious answer is to just GS the crest on, and it's a fairly simple shape, but I'm worried about my sculpting abilities and being able to shape them consistently with each other. The other thing that comes to mind is to get some of the aforementioned Spartan plume conversion bits and cut/convert them into the right shape. But I decided to come here and ask you all how you would do it on your own models. Astartes-ULTRA
Greetings Brother, If it were me I'd want to make sure each crest was a size match to each other. Looking at your pictures what you have there is a perfect semi-circle and with the front end cut to shape. It has some thickness to it and a bit of detail. If it were me I'd be inclined to grab a sheet of plasticard or thin sheet plastic, grab a hole punch and stamp out some small discs. Then take one of these discs and carefully cut it to shape and poly cement it to the helm. Then you can go about adding detail with gs if you like. Its just a theory but worth a quick try and for one small sheet of plasticard you can very quickly get 100's of matching sized perfectly shaped discs to use how you like and you can try different thicknesses till you get your desired look. And they will be consistent to each other. That's what I'd try anyway Good luck Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289088-hawaiian-helmet-crests/#findComment-3643710 Share on other sites
JeffTibbetts
What kind of material are they in real life? I think GS or hard plastic might not work too well as it could be too smooth? Or are you thinking this would be a metal version of it? Plague Angel
The real ones are made from feathers actually. Not just the plume, but the whole helm. So in this I'd be fine with plasticard, so that the Astartes' plumes are made from the same ceramite the helmets are. netminder69
If you could find a way to make a cutting shape of it (think : like a cookie cutter) you could roll out some sculpey or GS to the correct thickness (rolling pin with rubber bands on it to set the thickness) and then cut a bunch out at once, let dry and glue on. The trick would be getting a cutting shape made. Even if you cut one master out of something more solid and then lay it down and cut the shape with a hobby knife by tracing the master. Plague Angel
Like a plasticard master, then GS for the rest? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289088-hawaiian-helmet-crests/#findComment-3643768 Share on other sites
Plague Angel
Some minor xeno-heresy here: does anyone have a comparison of the size of a Dire Avenger Autarch plume with a Marine head? Cutting the plume hair away from the crest would leave a similar, if not quite the same, shape to what I'm aiming for. If nothing else it could serve as a template for the master.
