The least renown legion

Recommended Posts

The Alpha Legion and Thousand Sons were the least respected in terms of their military ability.

Te thousand sons were considered to be almost cowardly, and the Alpha Legion's help was received with reluctance by imperial forces as you could never really be sure what they would do...

According to Scars, pretty much nobody gave any thought to the White Scars at all. Jaghatai complains about "a throneworld that only now remembers that it has 18 Legions not 17", a Word Bearer doesn't actually recognise one of the WS Librarians at one point, and they're said to have spent so much time on the outskirts that they weren't thought of often.

The Thousand Sons weren't that badly regarded were they? As far as I remember they brought their fair share of worlds into compliance after regaining their strength post-magnus. They were cautious to openly use their powers around their brother legions though since they'd probably dislike it. (they finally felt free when Russ attacked Prospero though, being able to use their powers to full effect)

The Alpha Legion was probably if not the, at least one of the least regarded legions. They were the youngest, they were mysterious and nobody liked dealing with them. The imperial commanders wished to have another legion on Nurth instead of them because of their lack of history.

The Thousand Sons were well-known. Especially after Nikea. One might say they were famous. Or rather, infamous. And they were obviously a hit with the remembrancers pre-Nikea since getting a commission with them was considered something to be happy about for xenoarchaelogists and the such.

No, I'd say the reputation of being least renown would go to the Alpha Legion. They were new and IIRC Legion correctly, their victories weren't too widely known and as a result, were looked down upon by even Army commanders. Probably why they had no problem killing everyone at the end of the book.

The impression that I got about the thousand sons was that they were not well respected by either other astartes or the imperium at large who could not understand the knowledge and gifts that the legion possessed.

There were exception to this rule, but can other chaos legions didn't like them. Look how happy khan was to see members o the thousand sons when he was sent to prospero. Openly called them cowards

Well, I think my opinion on who is the least renowned is based on the definition of the word: talked about a lot. So to me, that would kick out Legions like the World Eaters and Night Lords who are well-renowned, but in a bad way. And Legions like the Sons of Horus and the Ultramarines who were/are well-renowned in a good way.

Which really just leaves the Alpha Legion and White Scars. Honestly, the only "outside of the Legion" source I can think of that talked about the White Scars was the Custodes in Sword of Truth who said he was impressed by the White Scars in the Blood Games, which to me speaks of a certain renown, even if ti is just within the Custodes. But I don't know if there is anything else on what the Imperium does or does not think of them.

I agree with this, but as a continuation, it also depends upon with who we are talking about. Every Legion, and I would say the Custodes as well, holds all others to have renown, and each would have their own ideas on who has the least, with the only common ground being that none of them would think of themselves as such. But if we are speaking of the greater Imperium, then my previous remark is hands down the most accurate. If we are removing them from the equation, then I would concur with the White Scars and Alpha Legion.

But it also depends on when. If this is after Alpharius Omegon is found, then it might be the White Scars. Before, the Alpha Legion.

I don't recall reading anything about a great dislike for the XX. Is that something from Extermination?

All I recall is that in Legion, the Imperial Army commander didn't like their lack of reputation. IIRC.

That was what I was thinking about too. They were an unknown variable, which irritated the Commander because he wanted a more reliable Legion. Reliable in that he actually knew something about them and could plan around it.

I remember this passage from The First Heretic where Ishaq Kadeen and other remembrancers are assigned to various fleets.

'"Who were you posted to?" he asked the girl next to him.

"The 277'th"

"Blood Angels?"

"Raven Guard."

He have her a pitying smile...'

Perhaps this is just Ishaq's opinion on the Raven Guard. But right before on the same page, he explains how the Word Bearers are awesome because of all they have conquered and because of their known victories. So perhaps he shows a general tendency towards the Raven Guard and perhaps they weren't kept in as high regard as the other Legions.

Though I strongly doubt that they were regarded as badly as the Alpha Legion.

It could be less related to the Legion's overall image and more specific to the Remembrancers. Like maybe the XIX were a well renowned Legion, but notable as having a poor outlook on Remembrancers or for not bring the more approachable for interviews, portraits, etc etc.
