Help with what to buy.

Greetings fellow brothers.

I have recently started my love for sanguinius again after a short spell with our hooded brothers of the dark angel chapter. I am trying to put together a small collection so I can start playing some games so I was wondering what advice u could give me on what to buy next. So far I have 2 sanguinary priests, 6 man tactical squad and 5 assault marines. What Hq do u suggest, was thinking Libby but like idea of captain for some reason, thought it would be cool for him to lead a small band into battle.

Let me know what you reckon

Get a tactical squad and Death Co box, bulk the tacs out to 10 man, and the same with the assault marines.

This leaves you with a spare body to convert to a HQ. I would go with a librarian, or convert your own Captain Tycho!

I would buy another tack box plus a death company box. The death company box has a zillion bits you can place on your tact's to make them Blood Angel. You want to use 4 of those tacts to up your to 10 members, as at 6 you get nothing except for a sargeant. So build one with a heavy weapon, and the other with a special weapon (I'd go melta or flamer, depending the role you want your tacts to fill). You the 5 death company marines to up your assault to 10 as well, again, go with melta/flamers on them and avoid special pistols (from my experiences they are not worth it).

Use the last 6 from the tactical squad box that will be left over to make bolter Death company Marines. Giggitty. Give 1 or 2 a power fist, or give a power sword/axe.

Get a Drop Pod for the assaults if they dont have jump packs.

Furioso Dreads with Frag cannons are awesome if they are in drop pods. But they are firemagnets, and really only effecive if fielded in pairs.

Stormravens are pimp

Reclusiarchs are good, put them with the death company (reroll hits AND wounds).

As others have suggested, at a minimum get a box each of tacticals and death company (if you can get the older tactical boxes, do so because they're slightly cheaper and don't have the newer gizmos those chaps in blue (and most everyone else) can use). As people mention, use most of the models to bulk out your two squads, then set up a 5 man bolter DC and use the last body as your HQ. There is enough fancy bits in the DC box to make a libby or Captain look like he's from the Blood Angels.

The ideas about getting some Death Company boxes to flesh out your squads is a good idea but if I may add, how do you wish to play your army?
It's all well and good buying things piecemeal if you can afford it, but it might be worth constructing some lists and posting them here for feedback. That way, you will be buying things you need rather than bench warmers.

With what you have got, put a Jump Pack one of your Sanguinary Priests (or better yet, magnetise them) to afford you some flexibility. Going forward, you can either:

  • Go mechanised and have your Assault Marines advancing behind the armoured wall
  • Get more Assault Marines for a jump force
  • Invest in some Drop Pods for a alpha strike force
  • Take a bit of everything for a balanced hybrid list

If you want to be silly get a dread libby and model it with the psychic power wings of sanguinius tongue.png
captains are a nice choice but I don't feel they have the love they needed, so I'd run with the libby

Just to be clear, the Furioso Librarian Dreadnought is an Elites choice, so you would still require a HQ choice.

Thanks for the input guys. I was planning on running a mainly jump list. Was thinking about running a jump pack Libby with assault squad and jump Sp. Then back up with storm raven. What do you think to putting a half a tac squad in here as a objective grabber then put the half with ML camping in my deployment zone. I also really wanna run a honor guard unit so I can make them tank hunt or do you think stern guard are better?

Or maybe attack bikes??

Also do u guys run reclusiarchs are chaplains. Do I run with death co. Or is lemartes better?

I'm a big fan of running a reclusiarch with my death company, personally.  Le Martes is a cool character, but I don't know that he is totally worth the cost ... but then since I run a non-jump pack death company that really may explain why I choose not to run him.  In terms of rerolls, Le Martes doesn't buff DC more than a regular chaplain, but he is quite good himself.

Jump Pack Death Company are so NOT worth the points. You fork out 35pts per DC guy, which is outrageous. In fact Lemartes is WAY over costed for a 2wd chappy that has to TAKE a wound for him to hulk out... If they gave him the stats of a reclusiarch, and even took away the hulk out THEN i can see the points cost, but still....

I agree with everything you've said.  I really wanted to run Death Company when I got into Blood Angels, but after I began learning how to make an army list ... they're too expensive to field the way that I'd like to field them (jump packs).  I now run them in a drop pod with a lot of bolters (and a few thunder hammers).  Lemartes is also more expensive than he is worth, I agree.  I like his story line, but that doesn't mean I'm going to field him against an opponent to put myself at a disadvantage.

I think I have to agree, I was thinking death co in a drop pod with bolters and the odd power fist. But then was also thinking of running sternguard with a few combi weapons, but then not sure if these are very blood angels but I love the new stern guard kit and always ran a squad of veterans in my DA army.

Sternguard are amazing and properly set up can really mess with an opponent's plans. I do mine up old school style, but with dc bits you can make some very BA themed vets. I never really used drop pods until I started fielding sternguards, and man do my opponents hate them. But this dex makes DC and Vanguard vets too pricey.

Magnets for the Assault Troops. Magnetize the Jump Packs and use them as you wish!

I used to magnetize weapon selections on my models.  I don't any more, but I still magnetize backpacks on my Assault squads.  I find that this allows me to switch them over to drop pod easily enough (and if I need to proxy a weapon into my squad I simply remove the backpack of that model for the game as a sign that he has a different load out, though I only proxy when playing verses my little brother).
