Augustus
Know No Fear has some detracting bits that might make you hate it if they are things that normally drive you crazy. It was mayhem and I think that is exactly what Abnett was going for. The pacing is jumbled and confusing. Much like what I imagine war to be like. You read about a rallying captain one minute and the next he's tied to a Titan leg with his appendages removed still alive. (Not sure if that actually happened. But I can imagine it. ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289186-struggling-through-know-no-fear/page/2/#findComment-3646309 Share on other sites

If Abnett was going for something similar in Know No Fear, it didn't come across well at all IMO. Molokai
"the road" was absolutely brilliant. McCarthy drew the reader in through subtle character development. I'm not getting any of that from knf. Augustus
Thanks KBA. I'll check that story out. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289186-struggling-through-know-no-fear/page/2/#findComment-3646385 Share on other sites
KBA
I don't mean to slam KNF, but McCarthy did what you enjoyed in a masterful way. You'd love it! HaSY
Before Know No Fear, I never care about Ultramarines and Guilliman. The book made me care for them to survive and win and they have a lot of outstanding captains.Given the interaction and understanding the humanity as encouraged by Guilliman, it will not be surprising why they sound that way. In fact, they do remind you of Alpha Legion in Legion by Dan Abnett. b1soul
The best succinct example I can think of is to compare the dialogue the Luna Wolves have in Horus Rising with that of the Ultramarines in Know No Fear. This really goes to show that it's all a matter of taste. I found the Luna Wolves to be too cheerful and having too much friendly camaraderie. A bit too much playful banter IMO. These were supposed to be a bunch of techno-barbarian killers from Cthonia who roamed the mined out tunnels hunting each other. They're no better than the Night Lords. Yet they come across as one of the more civil and refined legions, a bit friendlier with each other than expected. thor1234
I for one found Know No fear impsossible to put down, I dont think Ive read a book as quickly as I did KNF!!! infact I read it so quickly I imediatly read it again! I thought it was excellent, and was the inspiration for my Ultramarines force it added detail to an otherwise bland redition done by Graham Mcneil in the Ventris sereies...... just my 2 pennies..... Sevatar
I thought Know No Fear was great. Gulliman was not just a boring Smurf. On the other hand, I loathed Fulgrim. It made the Iron Hands just well, cannon fodder for the EC.
