311 Lamenters

Hi Gamers,

I read that 311 Lamenter's survived. I am thinking of creating an army based on this fluff.

Can anyone tell me if there is any info around of the composition of the troop types making up this 311?

If not, let me know your thoughts on what would make a good army based on this number?

Cheers!

311 guys is a lot of bodies and points, think 3 battle companies worth of line troops. Then I would use the eleven to represent sanguinary guard for 5, at least 3 sanguinary priests,2 librarians or chaplains, and a chapter master ( 1 Libby and 1 chaplain would work too) but that is just a guess.) I have not looked into the Lamenters at all beyond what is in our codex.

Random thoughts follow:

If I recall correctly, they are on a penitent crusade and unable to recruit, so no scouts, scout bikes, or scout landspeeders. I would assume any scouts that survived the Baddab war would be rushed through their process to become full marines. These would be your tactical, assault, and devestator marines.

I would assume that most of the survivors would be veterans due to the fighting during the Baddab war, though TDA would be really hard for them to replace. Therefore, composition of the unit elite  would include lots of Vanguard and Sternguard Vets and relatively low amounts of TDA. Surviving characters who had artificer armor would still have theirs from the baddab war. In addition, since artificer armor is armor that is just upgraded and repaired over time, I would think they would have an unusualy high proportion of it in the chapter armories.

I would also assume that do to attrition and low numbers of troops that vehicle maintenence would be difficult and that there would be fewer vehicles than typically used in a BA chapter. I would assume that devestators would fill this role more. In addition, any vehicles would be especially prized and the ones with troop capacity would probably be used by captains, honor guard, and other important characters. Land raiders would be holy relics at this point, as would storm ravens. I would assume any remaining techmarines would be very protective of them.

With the limited amount of gene seed and the inabillity to recruit, I would assume apothecaries would be more common on the battlefield. Both to heal injured soldiers and to collect any geneseed for when they can recruit.

Assault squads would be common, but again as survivors of the baddab war they would  be vanguard vets. Tactical marines would be sternguard for the same reason. Though they would probably have little access to the special ammunition, so creative list building would be needed.

I would assume death company would either be pretty common or pretty rare. Depends on how much they want to invest in keeping them around outside of battle. I would imagine that they would need every warm body they could muster, but I would also imagine that since their equipment is limited that the DC would probably not be as well armed as they typically would.

Modeling wise, I think there would be a lot of hastily repaired equipment with a lot of cosmetic blemish.

Does it work? Check.

Does it look pretty? Who cares? (Other than the OCD techmarine who is trying in vain to soothe neglected machine spirits)

Lamenters numbers are weird. They have 311 survivors from the Badab War, after which they're forced to go fight Tyranids to atone for being on the wrong side of Badab. They take heavy losses and "less than four hundred survive." Well, yeah, thanks for that, GW. Since less than four hundred went in the first place, it says nothing at all.

Malakim Phoros's status isn't known after Badab. I mean, the Lamenters themselves would probably know, and you can model/field him either way, but the fluff doesn't lean one way or the other. Libbies, chaplains, and sanpriests are at your own discretion too. Lamenters, for a while, had no Death Company at all and were considered "cured," but since Badab their Black Rage has been sudden and rapid, so DC would be fairly large out of the ~250 or so.
