2,500pt Stone Gauntlet IF list

So, I am really keen to try and field something very iconic for the Imperial Fists and to utilise some of their special rules. While I am really keen to field Sigismund, I think I will wait for his model, which still me a raft of other options.

The one which really tickles my fancy is the Stone Gauntlet Rites of War, the ability to bump infantry models up to Toughness 5 is very enticing, and I really love the Boarding shields look, even though the general feel is that the Breacher marines isnt too crash hot.

So 2,500pts:

HQ:

Praetor in Cataphracti Armour with Paragon Blade and Storm Shield

- Rites of War: Stone Gauntlet

Elite:

10 x Cataphracti Terminators

- 2 x Assault Cannons

- 8 x Storm Shields

- 8 x Lightning Claws

4 x Apothecaries (2 squads)

- 4 x Augury Scanners

- 4 x Artificer Armour

Troops:

4 x 20 man Breacher Squads

- 4 x Graviton Guns

- 4 x Artificer Armours and Power Axes (on Sergs)

Pretty much 5 squads, each of the breachers have an apothecary, the Praetor will run with the Terminators. Everyone except for the Apothecary and the Assault Cannon Terminators will be Toughness 5 and have Hammer of Wrath. The Apothecaries will give the Breacher squads Interecptor against Deep Striking units with their BS5 Bolters

Anti Armour will come in the form of Assault Cannons for the light armour and the Graviton guns (4 small blasts with Haywire per squad will hurt most vehicles). It might struggle versus flyers and 2+ armour saves, with only a spattering of AP2 weaponary (axes and Paragon blade).

It is a good idea, but personally, the Rite of War is just bad, as Breachers are a substandard choice. The typhons at 2.5k will just slaughter your troops. The Terminator s are far too expensive. Lightning claws are kinda bad, so drop them. Your are lacking anti air very badly, and anti tank too. I'm not so sure on Grav guns either, as they are Heavy on non relentless Breachers squads. Also, if you are set on Breachers, drop a squad, saving ~400 points. You could buy a Mortis, Predator Squadron etc.  T5 won't help against anti terminator weaponry I'm afraid, either. I'm sorry, but the Rite of War just pigeonholed you into bad choices for little gain.

I like the premise of the list however there are a few modifications I would make. Drop one of the breacher squads freeing up enough points for a mortis contemptor and a heavy support squad.

Drop the lightning claws on the terminators for power fists, I would also go for non cataphracti terminators because they are slow and purposeful so they can't overwatch and your storm shields give you a 3++ which is better than the 4++ of cataphracti plate.

On your Breachers I would do two graviton guns and two melta guns, great for intercepting things like contemptors!

That is all I would change it is fluffy and hard to shift.

1. I have no Idea what youre Rite is doing, becouse i dont know from where you all get the Intel what is in Book 3, so i only can give you an general advice.

2. This is far to much footlogging Infantry. You need some hard firepower or Spartas to draw the heavy guns away from youre Infantry.

Yes it is amazing what a Troop of 20 Astartes can do when an Apothecary and someone with an Artificer Armor stand in front and soake the main dmg, but when u only present Marines, what is very expecteble then all Firepower concentrate on them and you will bleed so hard out, that youre Troops cant do very much in the end. Also Moral checks are a huge thing in 30k so give youre large Troops ALWAYS an Vexilla (reroll all Ld checks) or somekind of protection from run away.

3. Grav Guns in 30k are for me a pice of Sh.... But try it, maybe im wrong and the mass of it do something.

4. Good Firepower to add are: Medusas, Reaper Las destroyers, Contemptor Mortis Dreadnoughts with 2x kheres Pattern or TL Lasca, Sicarian, Land Raider Achilles / (-Alpha)

Predator with Maschine Spirit and Magna Melta also Roxx.

Interesting, see I found 30K Gravitons to be the best anti armour weapons available. Glancing on a 2+ with a blast template, you are rarely going to miss and you can actually clip multiple vehicles if you are lucky. Only having one or two of the them isnt going to do a whole lot, but having them en masse will glance things to death in a single volley.

They ignore Flare Shields which is the bane of Melta and Las, and they still have a chance of hitting and doing something even when they 'miss'.

Admittadly they arent going to cause many wounds against infantry, but you throw a volley of them at any infantry and they are then moving through Difficult/Dangerous terrain, slowing them down, nerfing assaults etc.

Sadly I doubt I will be able to get the other 60 breachers marines ready in time for the event so I will go a completely different list, but I think this one will definitely be a core one for me once built. Thanks for the input all, I will tinker with the list over the next few months and see what I can do.

The reason most people don't like graviton guns is because they are heavy, and they use the blast template, if you move at all, you cannot fire them without Relentless or Slow and Purposeful, not to mention it's going to be very rare that you can maneuver them into position, wait a turn, then fire and take out whatever vehicle you are aiming at, they do not make reliably vehicle killers in the slightest since whatever tank they're aiming at can just drive away.

I'd also recommend dropping the Cataphractii Terminators for the regular ones, since you're getting shields which defeats the purpose of having the Cataphractii Armour in the first place, and you'll keep all of the downsides if you stay with that armour, and just two assault cannons are not going to scare away fliers, you're only going to hit with 1 with each cannon on average, which won't do a very good job at killing them.

Another problem I'm noticing is you don't seem to have any LoW protection, 2500+ points is the area where LoW are going to become a lot more common, how are you going to protect yourself from any of the super-heavies (flying and ground based) or Primarchs?  Almost all LoW weapons are AP2/1 and will destroy any of these squads that they come into contact with.

All right, enough negatives, the positives about this army are the apothecaries with breacher squads and this RoW are very hard to kill, but I don't think you should make almost your entire army out of them, I'd recommend 2, and have the others be faster moving squads able to capture any objectives that might spring up, or that might force the opponent to fire on them instead of the breachers, it's going to take the breachers a while to get to the enemy, so you want them shot as little as possible, and the terminators are a very good idea, just not worth it without some form of transport.

Why do I need eight? I only have four Breacher squads?

They misread that, I'm guessing they thought you wrote two squads, with four apothecaries in each squad, instead of 4 x Apothecaries (2 squads of 2 apothecaries)

I like the Gauntlet of Stone RoW I think it makes breachers a more viable option in non ZM games. You have to have the 2 compulsory breacher squads but if you want more troop choices so you can max out on your FA and Elite then just take cheaper options like a recon squad or two, it dosnt restrict the type of troops you can take only the compulsory choices. I dont treat this RoW as a foot slogging breacher list. Use them to your advantage, put them in cover close to an objective they are now a T5, BS5 stubborn thorn in the side of your opponent. Use the rest of your list to make them hurt.

Yay this is post #500! teehee.gif
