Departmento Munitorum: 5th-6th Edition Changes

I always felt that Mogul Kamir actually made rough riders worse, at least in 5th.

As Ive digested the codex over the course of the day I am liking it more and more. Looking forward to trying it out. I think I am going to go C:AM at Astronomi-con rather than DKoK. I can take carapace vets inside a chimera for the same price as DKoK grenadiers on foot.

Looks like sergeants can take boltguns, but not actual lasguns, at least, not by actual rules. That is a shame, I wonder if I could pay for the boltguns upgrade and just take the lasgun anyway, for the fluffz. All I want are lasgun sergeants for my volunteers.

I'd let you take them for free. Even with orders a single lasgun per unit isn't exactly game breaking.

Also, darn, broke my psyker too. It's like they decided to make most lists better while systematically gutting everything that made my army fun. :(

I'm a little annoyed with the PBS change, now they're just a glorified psyker? :( I'll take the cheaper Russes as compensation though. Tank Commander sitting in his Vanquisher? Yes please!

I like the points drop to heavy weapon upgrades as that feels long overdue, I've not had the chance to calculate my usual army list picks but I'm pretty sure there should be a respectable amount of points left over in the new codex :)

Even at level 1, can the Primaris still take two powers? If not can he be upgraded to level 2?

Primaris psyker have the option to buy mastery level 2. They get one power per mastery level.
Excellent. Now I'm not as sad, though being able to cast the 2 warp charge powers is a mixed blessing, not as much chance of getting puppet master, the trolliest power. Now to just figure out how to get him on the enemy's backfield...

The Heavy vehicle rule sadly does not stop firing an ordnance weapon forcing your other weapons to snap fire :( It still means that the other Russ variants are good sponson choices, certainly now that there have been quite significant price reductions so it's far more appealing than in the previous codex...

Punisher Pask sounds even better than before, though I find it hard to imagine a tank commander in anything but a Vanquisher. Just seems right somehow.

I think that when the time comes, I want to build a Punisher Pasktm and have him accompanied by a couple of Eradicators, each tank fully sponsoned up. That way I can use them to force a large number of saves on anything they open up on, while on the move.

A few have promoted it before here, so I imagine they've engaged smug mode at full force now it is even better. You could save points with just the tank commander version's BS4 but Pask's rules are tasty.

I'm glad, there was me worrying that I was all out of tanks for the ETL III and lo and behold GW practically comes to my front door to hand me a great reason to get more armour. I'm thinking of a couple of new Russes (magnetised) and Wyverns - four tanks will keep me busy for a little bit ;) I've got a ship or two coming in soon...

That combo would be devastating to enemy infantry, they could go with some troops to all but guarantee a successful advance. The Eradicator was good before, but it's criminally cheap now - two will vaporise entire flanks with impunity. Delicious.

Vanquisher pask for the win...twinlinked BS4 AND armorbane?  Talk about point-and-kill!

No more Hydras ignoring jink saves....

There went the best unit in the game for killing wave serpents.

It was my understanding that the Eldar tanks could not use Jink...?

ALL skimmers jink, just by moving. Thats how they get their cover saves.

At 75pts, the old Hydra not only got to fire on them at full BS- because skyfire targets skimmers, not just flyers- and twin linked, but also ignored jink saves. 3 5+s later, and you had a dead tank, penetrating hits or no. Sure, you needed two to get it off reliably as a one shot kill... but thats only 150pts, same price as the tank you just blew up. Take a third for insurance and do it all game long.

It was brutal. Thankfully only one IG player I met ever actually fielded them. They were always my #1 priority in a mechdar list. Footdar on the other hand...

Has anyone noticed they opened up basic infantry squad options for special weapons? Your normal squad can take a melta gun, plasma gun or sniper along with the ol' grenade and flamer.

The basic infantry squad could bring all of these things in the 5th Edition codex as well.

Does Straken still ignore armor saves? Also, it breaks my heart I've gotta give up my poor bodyguards for my CCS.

He's AP2 so basically, yes, he does.

As I realised while tossing ideas around in the Straken thread, another good change in the new codex is conscripts being appropriately priced. For the price of upgrading a CCS to Straken you can now have 35 conscripts plus a priest to make them fearless and get them to reroll their rolls to hit/wound in close combat. Talk about a tarpit unit. Even dedicated hand-to-hand units would get tied-up by that (especially if you max-out at 50 conscripts which is only the price of a vanilla Leman Russ).

Very, very tempting! Must get a spray gun to quicken things.

You'd need a few priests in there so that the don't get Challenged-out, right? Cheap, still.

Could always hide an enginseer in there too, to put PotMS on nearby vehicles.

EDIT: how about putting commissars or, a little more expensive, priests in HWS to boost their Ld for orders?

LOL...ah, conscript shenanigans.  I had a 50 man blob in 5th edition with nothing but a commie and five flamers.  They took about 70% casualties in the process, but they killed a flyrant in melee...He could only kill a couple of them per phase, and they needed fives to hit and sixes to wound, and then he had his armor save...but there were a damned lot of them, and after the first failed leadership test, they had LD10 from the commie.

/edit/

By the way, as soon as they killed the flyrant, a pack of raveners ate the rest of them, but it was worth every point to tarpit and eventually kill the flyrant.
