New Astra Militarum Tourney lists?

Hello B&C Imperial Guard,

I was curious what units, transports, weapon teams, etc. people will be seeing in tourneys. I guess I'll start:

I think it is possible that we will be seeing taurox spam. They are cheap(ish) and have an okay arsenal with the TL Autocannon. I wish they didn't look so horrible (imo) but I think vets and infantry squads will be seen riding in these. What do you all think?

I think carapace vets will be much more common than they once were. They are only 5 points more than flak armour vets were previously.

I think tank commanders will be common too. Russes in general I think will make a comeback with the price adjustments.

But time will tell.

Completely agree. Although I do like deepstriking and move through covering scions, but from a price standpoint hard to put them into a list...

What do you all think about flyers? Abandoned altogether for hydra anti-flyer or do you think vendetta's will still be a mainstay for, say, special weapon squads?

Yes, it is very hard to justify Scions even though they are cheaper than last edition Storm Troopers ... a squad of five of them is the same price as 10 carapace veterans. Hard to say that deepstrike and hotshot lasguns makes up that difference. Although the models look cool no matter what so there's that.

I'm not sure about tank commanders...they might work out as a second HQ, but they're soo easy to kill off, and threatening enough with their BS4 and tank orders that they'll be an even higher priority target than usual HQs.  Seems like an easy "slay the warlord" if you take a big warlord model with hull points instead of one that hides in a squad, possibly out of LOS or inside a vehicle.

I'll be running dismounted chameleoline vets.  They're 30 points per squad cheaper now, and with a company commander around, they can keep going to ground and still shoot, getting a 3+ save in pretty much any old cover, 4+ if not going to ground..but 3+ saves against pieplates...nice!  I'm giving them autocannons and heavy flamers.  BS4 autocannons are just godlike in 6th edition, and the combination of snare mines and a heavy flamer makes charging them slightly less attractive.  Obviously, I'll be adding in some russes.  Hull lascannons went down, so I'll take those, worst case if the two lascannons kill two marines between them, they paid for themselves.  Demolishers went up, but I'm still taking one of those.  To go along with that, I'm thinking the air assault formation from the stormtrooper codex.  The formation rules are stupidly awesome, and if I take them as allies, they're scoring...that gives me four valks for anti-air (they are not a squadron, so the 4x2 hellstrike missiles can be fired two at a time until the threat is gone, and not waste any) and/or antitank , three highly mobile scoring squads with dual melta, plus one nonscoring squad with four plasma guns...that means I'll want an officer of the fleet in my CCS to help me manipulate when the valks come in (earlier is better, but after any enemy fliers!)

The improvements to orders should hopefully see more of that - it was good in the previous codex but with the tweaks and new orders along with overdue point reductions for some infantry options inftantry lists have become notably better.

Wyverns are going to be good, get a couple of them for peanuts and watch as they obliterate infantry squads under buckets of dice.

I think the points increase to the chimera will only be a hinderance to fully mechanized armies. I think they will take tauroxs and PCS and CCSs will take chimeras for issuing orders...

If it is just a few vets or something, however, I believe Chimeras will still be the bee's knees.

Also, totally agree on yarrick. The fact he can issue orders now and a significant points drop will make him a commonplace in many lists. Same with Straken.

I see the small points increase to the Chimera as irreverent. Points go up in one spot and drop in another.  Redundancy will win. And with the drops in points cost all over the book Some Russ being cheaper, I'm even less ...? bothered, interested, maybe concerned?

I'm sure some "optimized list builders" will cry But it sounds like I will effectively get the same army with a little more I didn't bother with before.

I couldn't care at all about Special characters. I see no reason for them to turn up in every game.  I don't care who they are or what army they belong to.  What would that say about me if I couldn't / didn't win without them.

And as I'm grumpy this morning... I'm sure Vet spam will continue on hardly effected.

I think special characters are cool and add fluff to the army. Not to mention when you pay an additional 40 points for a special character tank commander, it's not like it's more or less "fair" or that somebody is less of a strategist because they use them.

If anything, i think a balanced list with a special character takes more cunning to play than, say, triptide tau or taudar lists.

uberwolve: One thing I am really disappointed with this codex is that fact that not only is vet spam likely to continue on hardly affected, it may well even get worse with the price reductions. A vet squad in a taurox is 15 points cheaper than its chimera equivalent in the 5th ed codex.

I wouldn't know anything about that. I play Guard and Orks.  I view Special Characters as a crutch. and don't use them.

I wouldn't quit a game or anything if the other side has some but I also don't see a reason that they should always be used either.

They give a player a lot. And yes I understand some armies couldn't be fielded with out them. Spend your points how ever you like.

Yes I agree. It's just another case of the Design team saying how can we let players field Guard with out having to buy any.

I really was wishing that Vet squads would be art of a platoon or a platoon element. Which would fit the template for Guard.

Yes, random reader I know about the name change...

I guess it really doesn't matter very much one way or the other. I wont change my methods they work. I don't see that changing at all. Honestly the only assessment that I will do is look at the majority AV of flyers. If I can rely on multilasers to glance them to death then that's more points I am not spending on less over all useful units. I will pack platoons into Chimeras all day every day and forgo the squad weapons if that serves me better. If I am going to be tabled it's going to take 7 turns.

My own legacy list would lose 90 points to the chimera bump, gain 10 from the tank hull lascannon reduction, lose five to the demolisher bump, and lose ten to the company HQ bump...that's a net of 105 points more expensive...unsustainable!  As a result, I'm shelving my chimeras.  They're not at all unreasonably priced at 65 points, but I can't take the 105 point hit to the list overall, plus I'm in love with the stormtrooper air cav formation: rerolls to reserves, rerolls to scatter, rerolls to hit, and split fire...combined with two BS4 special weapons per five man squad.  Ultimate reliability in obliterating whatever's threatening to overrun me.  That, and forward sentries vets are 30 points per squad cheaper...more BS4, and 4+ cover in mundane terrain,  with the option for 3+ by going to ground in case of pieplates.  Nothing wrong with 65 point chimmies, I'm just attracted to other options for the moment.
