Howdee,

So I'm at the point of having trimmed, cleaned and washed 25 MkIII marines and two apoths. I'm waiting for my MkIV marines to arrive but am thinking about where to go next. Having not played, and only seen 1000pt armies at Emperor's Legions, i'm wondering what are the 30k units to avoid looking like a tool?

I'm assuming not many people like double plasma jumping moritats? What about with sepentas?

Should I avoid maxing certain special or heavy weapons in support and heavy squads?

Any units that shouldnt be taken in multiplies? (I'm playing word bearers)

Any other advice?

Cheers

Nick

A tooled-up Spartan with tooled-up Terminator Squad is probably something popular that people hate because it's so damn hard to kill. Big points sink though, so make sure you punish your opponent by blowing his remaining troops sky-high :P

I don't think there are any units that are useless imo, they all have jobs that they do well. It's less like 40k in that respect where most of the time people avoid things like assault squads and vanguard assault squads due to the price and usefulness, in 30k though assault squads are troops and relatively well priced and there's no such thing as vanguard assault squads that act as point sinks. I'd just be weary of putting so many points in units though that don't have a 2+ save or an invulnerable save, that's usually one key things where I draw the line.

Rotor cannons ain't specially good imo, although they look cool they are pretty useless unless you're going for weight of shots but even then I believe they are pretty bad.

If by 'tool' you mean 'guy that no one wants to play against,' then I'm not sure there are any.  Everyone has access to the same things - there are some units that are weaker, but I can't think of any of the top of my head that are blatantly broken.

I think Moritats are fairly balanced given all their restrictions.  Yeah, they could hurt if they get to within 12 inches of one of your squads.  But they're expensive, they have to be taken as a non-compulsory HQ, and they can't hide in a normal squad - you have to buy a squad specifically for them to hide in.  All of that is taking away from the rest of your army.

Yes.  Generally, lascannon heavy support squads are too expensive per man.  There are cheaper ways to get tougher lascannons.  Plasmacannon heavy support is a bit of a tossup, you could take Predator Executioners for a similar cost.  There are tradeoffs, though.  Melta is of questionable use in 30k given the prevalence of armored ceramite, so MM heavy support and meltagun tactical support aren't terribly worthwhile.  Plasmagun tactical support is quite expensive and requires a good delivery system.

Praetors. :B

As far as I am concerned, redundancy is good, it's just a question of whether or not you have the points for it at a given army size.

Any other advice?

I talk a lot, and my opinion is only worth what you paid for it.

Don't run 2 Sicarans and 2 Mortis Dreads.

That to me is min-maxing and missing the point of playing 30k in the first place.

For some reason, big blobs of missile launchers also annoy me (though maybe not others) since they can wipe just about any power armor or tank you have short of a spartan off the field in a turn.

Twin plasma moritat isn't bad since they have such short range and can only take out one unit before dying horribly. (Taking twin serpentas is actually pretty cool and what I'm thinking for my DA moritat)

From reading a while back, a lot of people commented on Praetors always being equipped with the Paragon Blade for its best of the bunch stats etc.  If you want to avoid cliche Heresy things, that's a good way to start.

I like my dual Sicaran's and Mortis dreads.. not that I have to field them all the time, but I love the models and wanted the option.

I guess you might see a lot of Mortis Kheres or TLLC dreads, as well as Sicaran's, so there's more units if you want to avoid cliche cool / effective models.
