Opinion on this black?

Recommended Posts

I think the highlights are too strong personally.

I think the colours are better than straight grey, but just too much. Maybe only use the brightest colour on the very top of the knees, neck, pads and back pack.

Maybe a couple of glazes of black and blue would help tone it back a little.

I definitely think the legs look more blue/grey than black because of the strength of the highlights under the knees and on the feet.

*edit* stupid phone and it's 'predictive' text...

At this distance, yes, the highlights look strong, but from across the table? Your force will look sweet. Same deal as GWs Dark Angels, the highlights are really in your face , until your 3-4 feet away.

Agree.  Don't change a thing.  The cold black is a very strong look on the table top.

Looks good. Little bold up close but would stand out well on a table top.

If you do want to tone it down a bit try a black glaze rather than a wash. Basically thin your black wash with water or medium (b1/w2) and brush it over more like paint rather than slap it on.

Start with an off black as the base. I usually do black and hawk turquoise (don't know the current colour) as the base as it can be shaded and adding space wolf grey for highlights is less harsh than just grey.

You can ali's glaze with other colours to add more interest into the colour of the armour.

Longer process but I think it looks better and it's the only way I've been able to paint black and be happy with it.

Hummm... I think you've got great taste, but I'm a bit bias, Black is something close to my heart. As others have expressed, if you overdo the highlights a little bit like you have, it looks very nice at the 1m+ range most people will be viewing the army from. Up closer it's a bit strong, but at range it really adds the (in my opinion) necessary 'pop' to the Black while letting the surfaces stay true Black.

I went with a Blue-Black by starting with what has become Fenrisian Grey and Russ Grey, but those are much closer in contrast than the old Shadow Grey and Spacewolves Grey, if memory serves me correctly. To have more control over the 'steps' in the highlights, you may want to consider mixing your own highlight pots. Get 4 bottles, two dark and two light. One of the dark bottles you will darken waaaay down with Black (a little Black goes a long way, so be careful) to get a charcoal-like Grey as a base Grey 1. Leave the second dark bottle as-is for Grey 2, but use some of it (and any poured off the first bottle to make room for black) to darken one of the lighter bottles for Grey 3, and leave the other lighter bottle for Grey 4. Tweak the final line to taste and you'll get a nice 4 step range that looks great from table viewing distance; even up close it holds up if you do it cleanly.

I've got a bit of a more in depth tutorial about my method buried somewhere in my WIP thread Legion Rising. Feel free to have a look and ask for any clarification you might need. Classes are all but finished for the year, so the warp storms are clearing from my dark manucatorium; I'll be talking and working more shop over the coming months.
