Friends, I have been Converted to 30k!

Hello everyone. Some of you may know me as the snide Ultramarine troll who walks these forums ;-)

The other day I had a browse through Horus Heresy Book 1 - Betrayal, and I am incredibly impressed with the lore, the art, the care and love taken with these armies and the book itself. I have rushed out and after spending a massive chunk of money I'm now the proud owner of a pro painted WARMASTER HORUS (pics soon - the model is incredible although the huge base will be annoying in actual games) and plan on starting a Sons of Horus army

For the moment, I will run Horus and a SOH Tac squad as allies to my 40k Ultras in the games I play whilst I slowly build up my 30k Legion (I'm explaining this as an alternative dimensions and time travel mumbo jumbo) lol

Anyways, what works well in 30k? I want to build up a 2000 point army but I want to spend as LITTLE as possible. Can you guys advise me of what models I should aim for, I want to make the army very elite (not looking for a tournament busting list) but I should mention I do like a flyer or two :-D

I should also mention that I frequent two very popular gaming clubs and have multiple games a week... but they are all against 40k armies...

Well well well Ishagu...it was only a matter of time...

If you are looking for an elite cheap army, I advise you to take the Pride of the Legion rite of war. That way you can pick up the FW terminator bundle and have your two troop choice already that are tough as nails and super customizable. They will run points heavy especially if you want to run them in a Spartan.

Also grab a set of Justariean terminators as they are points heavy (a small error, they will drop the points a bit on them for the FAQ) and you can run a MOTHAEFFIN MULTIMELTA on your termies. Plus they are super fluffy especially with Horus.

Big tactical squads are great too and you can't go wrong with them. The Merciless Fighters rule makes them awesome.

The rest is up to you

Blah blah blah do the 13th to many SOH, WE, DG IW out there already Be the Captain and not the crew!!!

Hey deathspecter!

We're heading to this insurrectionist planet named Isstavaan III...I want you to be the leader of the boots on the ground!!! I know you will do great, so don't look to the sky for help :)

Thanks,

Hey guys. Ive been reading betrayal...

So, I can take Horus as long as he is only 1/4th of my force in points... Does this include an army with allies?

As an example: 1000 points of Sons of Horus, 500 points of Imperial Army, then Horus?

Im definitely invested in this... But looking at the book, I hate to say it but my 40k Ultras are definitely better at 2k points than the 30k Legions.

Well, strictly rules as written, 30k Marines can't ally with 40k marines.  They can only ally with those elements found in 30k's own allies matrix.  However, for using Lords of War, you can only spend up to 25% of your total points on the Lord of War, and Primarchs can only be taken for the army's primary detachment (IE, you can't have, say, 1250 points of Emperor's Children as your Primary and then Horus + 250 points of SoH as your allied).

He said Imperial Army, so presumably means the 30k IG equivalent. However, that list does not exist as yet, so I'd start working on the other 1k and see what happens...

He said 40kl UM in his first post.  But regardless, the rest still stands - you can only have the Primarch that matches your primary detachment.

I want to fit the Primarch in to a friendly game asap with my opponent's permission, hence allying with my 40k Ultras.

But once I have a bigger 30k force I do intend to follow the correct Ally matrix :-)

I was indeed talking about the Imperial Army from the 30k period. I saw it on the ally matrix. I assumed there might be an Imperial Army list in one of the newer HH books... Guess it's something I'll have to wait for :-(

I am intending to build the following list:

-Legion Centurion, Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, Artifacer Armour

-Warmaster Horus

-2 x 5 Justerin Terminator squads, Multi Meltas in each

-2 x 3 Outrider squade, TL Plasma guns on each bike

Just need to decide how to fill the remaining 390 points...

Balthamal gave you the important rules. As a proud owner of 3 such tanks, I can't say enough good things about them. I used all 3 against a dark eldar army at 2500 points this weekend, and they made a huge impact. Never underestimate that much firepower when it's able to move fast enough to get to the right place every time.

I'd love to see some XIII Legion warriors on the ground. Far too few of Guilliman's sons around these parts.

Plus, blue and gold look stunning together. smile.png

Have no fear, I'm already working on that...

As I collect Ultras in 40k I couldn't bring myself to collect them in 30k :-P

Welcome aboard. I am a fairly recent 30K convert myself. Although in lieu of the Warmaster's own I have chosen the bloody-handed sons of Angron as my first army.

I concur with the choices of Terminators and Sicarans. I have both in my army and on paper everything certainly looks solid.

If you want to take a third option, check out the Contemptor Dreadnought. The Sons of Horus has a lovely Contemptor body from FW. Gaming wise, it's a very flexible piece - just add some magnets for swappable weapons.

As for 30K vs. 40K, I would say that with 30K, you generally see a smaller fan base (relatively speaking, and that number is increasing rapidly), more dedication, and a higher skill level in modeling/painting (because nobody wants to ruin expensive FW kits). The HH books from FW are outright volumes of history - the cool thing is that they tie in very well with the BL HH novels. If you haven't check those out yet, I highly recommend select volumes. Given your choice of legion, you'll definitely want to read the opening trilogy as well as the upcoming Vengeful Spirit.

Good luck and Godspeed on your 30K adventure. Again, welcome aboard. :D
