So, I'm preordering the new Bullgryns to expand my traitor guard army and want to get a tank too to pick up in store next week.
I am not normally a fan of tanks, but in the case of IG, I am happy to include them.
Only problem is, the kits build different variants, so if I pick one, I'm stuck with only certain builds and I don't know anything about them.
So I put it to you guys to help me decide, after 13 votes, I'll purchase the one most suggested.
Here are your options:
1 - basic Leman Russ kit. Can build standard variant, vanquisher, exterminator or eradicator.
2 - demolished kit. Can also build punisher and executioner.
3 - another tank that's not a Leman Russ.
Please vote and leave a comment as to why that would be the best option. Thanks guys smile.png

I'm actually going to suggest a Chimera first.

Because if you're building a Word Bearer Traitor Guard force - then I'm assuming you're going to have lots of Infantry (Cultists, etc.) and it may be nice if some of them didn't have to walk.

I would actually get Chimera - Hellhound - Leman Russ - some sort of Artillery in that order.

Hellhound before Leman Russ because thematically, a HH sort of fits WB better than a LR.

But if you are set on a Leman Russ (and there are indeed good gaming reasons to go with it first) - then, as others have suggested, I would get the basic BT, magnetize it - then also buy a separate Punisher turret from ebay or bitz box and magnetize that too.

Thanks for the votes so far guys.

I am not set on anything at the moment to be honest, that's why I am posting it on here. Whilst a Leman Russ seemed like a good idea, I have no idea about any of the armour available to IG so was hoping to get some advice.

The Hellhound variants look awesome though, especially the poison gas one that wounds on 3's? and has AP3. Yes please!!

Will probably get all the kits at some point, I just need help deciding which is best if I had to pick one for a small list at the moment.

I'd have to vote basic Russ kit with magnets as well.  Sturdy and flexible with good reach.

But for funz, lets match up tanks with the chaos groups your traitors might ally with:

Black Legion:  Demolisher

Word Bearers:  Hellhound (fire)

Iron Warriors:  2 Basilisks (boom)

Nightlords:  Wyvern Battery (shred)

World Eaters:  Punisher with traitor Pask (rending)

Alpha Legion:  Deathstrike Missile (seems like a bond-villain sort of tank)

Thousand Sons:  Executioner with plasma sponsons (that much plasma is kinda magical)

Emperor's Children: no clue, but the crew would be half-naked

Deathguard:  Banewolf (flesh-eating chemicals)

Not saying they're "spot on" matches but if I wanted to theme-up my traitor guard allies with a traitor legion, this's how i'd roll.

Leman Russ. There's a reason why it's named after a primarch. Second choice is always the trusty Chimera.

I agree. My LeManRuss Battletank have always performed admirably on the tabletop, it is however a model that draws a lot of fire to it. But on the other hand that gives the Chimeras a chance to move up the field.

We Guards love heavy armour, the fondness for them comes naturallybiggrin.png

Could somebody explain why so many are going with the LRBT? Not critical...just wondering. I feel as though in the new book the punisher and executioner are the best too. Just curious to see if I'm missing something. Thanks!

Even with the reduced cost i still believe the punisher to be the worst variant due to it's short range. The executioner is still a solid build,as is the demolisher, however,as a starter tank I think the standard Russ, magnetized so it can become any variant in the box is the winning set imo,4 tank variants, all cheap

Thanks guys!!! It looks like we have a clear winner with about 8 of the 13 votes I wanted.

The standard Leman Russ kit and it's variants (magnetised of course - although I have no idea how to do this) seems to be the first one to buy.

I definitely have to get a hellhound next though!!

And just out of interest, if you guys had to pick one variant from this kit, which would it be and how would you equip it?

E.g. Tank, Hull and Sponson Weapons, Extras.

Only problem with the tank commander is that I'll have to include at least a second Leman Russ in the same squadron, which I won't have. Also, how does it become a 1 in 3 chance to get outflank? I did not understand that part as if he is my warlord, are there not still 6 traits available to him?

Would that combination work as a HS choice?

Can't really afford both until I get my next lot of Student Finance, but that's definitely an option for the future when I run a bigger list. As they will be used as allies to my Word Bearers, I'm looking at about 800-900 points and more than one tank will eat into this too much at the moment.

What I need right now is a single HS Leman Russ that can complement my small force nicely.

As the standard kit was chosen, which of it's options would best achieve this (ignoring the possibility of changing with magnets for now)?

I've added a poll for you, to make counting up the votes easier. Everyone please make your vote :)

My vote was for the Demolisher because it's tougher so works well supporting infantry and there's not many problems it can't solve. The Executioner is a lot of fun too as is the Punisher now it has been reduced in price. You should definitely magnetise it, it's easy to do and well worth it.

It's a Russ, of course it'll look cool ;)

As nice as the standard Russ is now the Eradicator is so much cheaper it's a real steal if you want something to deal with infantry. I'll be adding another Russ to my collection as part of ETL III, it'll be magnetised but you can be sure it'll be rolling on to the table as my second Eradicator plenty of times :)

Thanks again guys!!!

How does ETL work? I assume it's a painting challenge from what I read, but I don't know the restrictions/rules for it. Or the time frame.

Was thinking of entering whichever tank I choose and the Bullgryns I'll order with it. Would you guys recommend? I want to get my guard done and so would choose this team over chaos at the moment as I fancy a new challenge. I know it's not much but I have never done one before and want to start small just to make sure I complete.
