Newbie attempts to make city (pic heavy..ish)

A few weeks ago i decided that i wanted to build city terrain after playing my brother (I'm Dark Angels, he's World Eaters) and everytime i kept wiping the floor with him due to lack of terrain (we had a few pieces here and there but nothing really compelling). It basically turned into me sitting back laying constant wave of bolter fire while he tried to advance into melee.

So my goal was to start building a city to make things more interesting. I wasn't aiming for anything tournament quality, just something functional yet looked decent on the table. So using the Citadel Realm of Battle Gameboard my idea was to have 4 buildings on each of the flat 2x2, then 2 on each of the 2x2s with terrain (kind of idea is the hills would be on each end with the city built in the middle of the board.

Well after working on it for the past few weeks Its slowly but surely coming together and had the urge to show off what i've accomplished so far:

Sort of the basic layout im looking to do, hopefully there will be enough room for a land raider to fit...

Another angle, with one building undercoated

Yet another angle, tried to build a bridge between buildings to add alternate routes for the armies

And bonus; my paint booth i made that works way better than i thought it would:

Over all buildings wise i'm about 1/4 of the way completed (not including painting, and making misc rubble area terrain). Comments, critiques, suggestions, ideas would be most welcome!

Dude....those are freaking nice! I say more catwalks! Make buildings that are big enough for tanks to drive through and......more catwalks!!! Also build something that COMPLETELY obscures LOS that you can lay smack dab in the center of your table. Like a building that has collapsed onto its side.

I agree with red horse a few cat walks and a tower/building that is collapsed or complete that obscures would be a nice tactical touch :) great work and

Please when your done do a battle report as that table is shaping up really well :D

Thanks for the tips! I was actually thinking about adding more cat-walks to have it sort of necromunda style. I was thinking center-piece could be a massive desecrated cathedral (having it as long as the skyscrapers are tall roughly), but i'm really liking the idea of a massive skyscraper collapsed on its side so i may have to do both.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been pretty busy of late but I've made some progress. Also went and upgraded my hardware a bit by buying a Styrofoam cutting table for more precision cutting and some other misc. tools.

Heres a WIP of my chapel fortress so far...

For the most part i use 1/2 inch Styrofoam, Foam Putty (to fill in cracks, gaps, make things level, ect.), and PVA glue.

The Aquila was pretty simple, i just printed out the design cut it out then placed it over the Styrofoam as a template. I was pleasantly surprised how well it came out considering how easy it was.

As for the catwalks i'm definitely trying to figure out how to implement them. Main hurdles i'm facing is i want the buildings spread enough so ideally tanks can move between them. Also i want to keep it modular enough so you can rearrange the buildings to keep it fresh.

Also thanks for the tip Quixus! i was thinking about how to make it look a little more complex and adding buttresses would definitely do the trick.

Colour me interested happy.png I've always wanted to do my own terrain, but was never sure of the simplest way of doing it.

All i did to start was cut out four walls, make some windows, took a marker and made lines where i wanted to cut to make it look like it was blasted/fallen apart. Then took my styrofoam cutter and started cutting away.

I think ruins are the easiest to start out with because if you screw something up (like i have many times) you can just chalk it to up to "well its ruins, its suppose to look messed up!".
