The_Terrible_Angel
Hello, I have recently come back to 40k after a few years away. I tried to start a xenos army but failed. So have decided to start a Space marine army. My current choices are either Dark Angels, Salamanders or Imperial fists. However when I last played and painted yellow was a nightmare to do, has this become any easier? I was wondering if people could share their experiences with the new paints and in painting imperial fists. Pictures are welcome Thank you The_Terrible_Angel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289883-painting-imperial-fist-yellow/ Share on other sites
Son of Carnelian
It has gotten somewhat easier. The new GW yellow paints, including Averland Sunset, are a real life-saver. White undercoat is still the way to go no matter what shade of yellow you want in my opinion. This was my result after building up several layers over white. +++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289883-painting-imperial-fist-yellow/#findComment-3658959 Share on other sites
Hellrender
Or, for a lesser quality, but still quite decent, and very easy to pull off: 1: Prime White 2: Army Painter Daemonic Yellow 3: Highlights with a lighter yellow of choice (optional) 4: Shade with Sepia or Army Painter Soft Tone. Some like a darker shade, like Dark Shade or Agrax Earthshade. Gets a bit grittier, watch out for streaking and pooling though. 5: Done. NovemberIX
Yellow is easy(ish) Prime white (I prefer Duplicolor sandable primer) Load a brush with Lamenters yellow glaze Brush onto the model, while it's still wet I load the same brush with FlashGitz yellow and let it spread Alternate till you get a bright yellow, then shade it. (I use combinations of nuln oil, seraphim sepia, and Drakenhof nightshade) Then add battle damage (I tend to go for a very subtle sort of wear & tear) http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag67/NovemberIX/2b06bd1a9ec7745bafd4f347d5922eaa_zps01eba77b.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289883-painting-imperial-fist-yellow/#findComment-3659020 Share on other sites
Cain21
My foumula has worked quite well for my likes, although a bit grittier than some fisties prefer, I believe it provides a better grim dark realistic appeal to them. 1. Base black (heresy I know but it does work), I use a walmart flat black primer 2. Approx 2 thin coats of averland, sometimes takes 3 3. Usually 1 thin coat of yriel but again sometimes it takes 2 4. Do all my detailing with other colours 5. Fix any messups that got onto the yellow areas. 6. Highlight with flash Gitz 7. Wash with agrax. Here is a link to my wip thread there are pleanty of angles and types of models for you to examine there but all have had this same approach with yellow. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/283066-cains-4th-co-fists-of-dorn-update-0418-pic-heavy/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289883-painting-imperial-fist-yellow/#findComment-3659034 Share on other sites
Son of Carnelian
Thanks guys, Marshall what recipe did you use for the whole model? 1.) White Base 2.) Two coats watered down Averland Sunset 3.) Two coats watered down Yriel Yellow 4.) Wash lightly with Seraphim Sepia, focusing only on recesses. 5.) More watered down Yriel Yellow to touch up any mistakes and even out all the armor. 6.) Highlight with Flash Gitz Yellow And this step I have never done but for character models I would recommend. 7.) Fine highlight with Dorn Yellow Add battle damage, honor markings, transfers etc. as needed. MordentHex
diversify your paint range, dont use only one range(GW) because you think it may be the best. Mix and match until you really find that recipe you like for your major colors. Not all colors are equals from different brands. this can be surprising to many beginner painters, but luckily enough these days there are plenty of company choices to choose from at a good quality price. Also do research before you start buying up large amounts of paint, Its not really worth it to splurge on 100 different colors when in reality you only currently need 10 or 20. Everyone has their favorites ways depending on their painting style. What would be your preferred painting style and level of detail? That may help us to help you also.
