Alpha Legion Units

Recommended Posts

Okay given all the information coming for Extermination, and my endless quietly brewing passion for them (like a coiled snake waiting to strike), I am 90% certain I will start my venture into the great Horus Heresy as the Alpha Legion.

However I am interested in trying to make the army as "fluffy" as possible. I don't really care about winning games, I care about having fun and playing cool stuff.

So what units do you think are cool and fluffy for the Alpha Legion, I know it is said that the Alpha Legion's sneaky tactics were all done before the battle, and then they deployed in force like any other legion. But are there any units that don't fit into the alpha legion.

I am open to any and all comments and love listening to your guys passions when it comes to the subject. Based on memory from previous two books the units I really kinda like are:
Contemptor Dreads
Tactical Squads
Rapier Gun Batteries.

Everything else is kinda open and I'm willing to use it.

Also a note with this, is what the forum's opinion on which Legion Specific units to steal for the Alpha Legion, again coolness factor is what I'm going for:
Iron Warriors Cyclone Missile Launcher Terminators
Salamanders Pyro-clasts

It's at this point I stop writing/gibbering and hope someone understood anything that I said, and I get some suggestions.

Does anybody know the actual rules for the Alpha Legion Rite of War is. Specifically requirements and restrictions?

I mean I'm generally not a Raven Guard fan, although I don't entirely know what they're units do, will have to read up on them.

What units can deepstrike, I thought it was a rare-commodity in Horus Heresy games. Outflank i'm assuming Rhino mounted Marines held in reserve, and Alpha Legion rules allow outflanking?

I know Veterans can take Outflank, but seems a waste of Elite's choice

Scanning through the first book (Betrayal), and it seems most of my units will be sitting in the Troop and Fast Attack sections

Legion Tactical Squads

Support Squads

Maybe some Assault Squads

Certainly Reconnaissance Squads!

Seeker Squads are almost a requirement

Whats the views on getting heavy weaponry in? Stuff to deal with armour, terminators, and large bulks of infantry?

Are the Devestator Squads any good?

Is artillery Alpha Legion fluffy?

Weirdly Elites section seems to be pretty low, except maybe Rapiers for anti-tank-ness? And for the legion specific unit steal. And any Alpha Legion specific units! Also Contemptor dreadnoughts! Although surely Mortis versions are just more worthwhile?

What is the opinions plain Contemptors or Mortis versions?
I think Rapiers are missing out :/

Flyers are messy in this edition so simply on that front I’d stay away, otherwise flyer support would definitely be part of the attack-from-all-fronts panoply.

Yeh I like the idea that the Alpha Legion utilse every asset the moment they choose to strike, overwhelming the enemy on every front and erasing them outright. So I almost feel olbiged to take some flyers just for that reason. The question is which ones.

I like the look and imagery of the Primaris Lightning, but the Fire Raptors weaponry looks deadly.

Skimming through the legion specific units, the FireDrake Terminators sound a clever draft pick, terminators that can hold objectives... As well as having two wounds!

The rest (from first 2 books) don't tickle my fancy sadly. Except for a bit of infantry blood letting, at which point using some Sons of Horus or World Eaters stuff
