SW1's 30k ETL III.

SW1

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start up my blog ready for the ETL kicking off in a few days.

Still trying to work out what to do as my 1st vow. Currently most of the stuff I'll possibly use is in jars stripping. I've got 5 resin tac marines at the moment may have to find some combi-weapons or special weapons to make them into a different type of squad. Pics will happen soon.

I've been reviewing what can possibly be used in my HH army and there's a few models I'm not sure about. For example the old metal landspeeders have a pilot and gunner in the wrong mark of armour. Same with the plastic bikes I've got. Not sure it's going to be time efficient to try tackling these in the ETL as it might take me months to get much finished.

So I've got some old metal beakies stripping and I'm hunting my plastics to locate a full squads worth. I'll use the normal plastic arms and just need to source the correct pads. I've also got a few dreads stripping and I've got a few resin FW IH's I need to finish off prepping.

If I can find a quick good looking way of rescuing my oop rhinos and variants I'll also look at tagging them into the mix as well. Once I've got everything stripped I'll have some pics up. :)

Legion Seeker Squad (5 man) ... Nuncio-vox, 5 Combi-plas, Power Weapon ... 245pts

My plan to use old school arms has backfired as there's too much detail sticking out of the chest stopping the supporting arm reaching the bottom of the gun. So I'm going to try the new arms and the pads I've shaved down from normal Ragnar pads. :)

Did a dry fit with the old arms/bolters and it looks like the ones that are going to be raven guard will behave themselves!!!

Fixed the issue of grenades and such getting in the way on the wolves. Just chopped at the arm and turned outward a bit. Then used another arm to give them a chainsword (I know they can't have them but rule of cool says what space wolf would leave home without a hth weapon). I've ended up using the old power weapon and chainsword on the SW to try and keep it as retro as possible. However I will probably end up with 2 of the first squad using the new arms so I can get them in the classic weapon across the chest pose.

I've built the vox backpacks by adding a wire antenna to the back packs with a bit of the haft of a chainsword at the tops which I had thanks to drilling out the chainsword before assembling. I always had issues with getting chainswords and power weapons on the old arms. Drilling and pinning actually helps avoid the distortion issues I had with them as a kid. Sounds daft but it works.

Ragnar, Njal and the Iron Priest are in to strip in a bath of dettol with a few extra models for the next vow. The slow part of this vow is the prep which I'm really enjoying. Previously I'd slap the models together ASAP and get them painted.

Shockingly I've found lots of metal vents still on the models!

Once I've got a squad assembled I'll get pics up. Currently at 3/5 assembled for the heavy squad and 3/5 assembled for the first seekers squad as well. :D

Hmmn ... I was going to force myself to wait till I had full squads before getting any paint on them.

However I'm slightly impatient so having a bit of a dry spell of weather I've given them a quick spray of black. Going to need to buy some grey paint ASAP. :)

While I'm assembling the first vows worth of models I'm tempted to assemble more at the same time.

These RG are just crying out for assembly. Then there's my little side project of trying to make pads that'll make the slightly newer metal TDA's have matching shoulders to the old lead captain. If that works I'll have 30-40 TDA's to add to the mix.

Just given the 6 built and sprayed SW's a quick 2nd coat of black this time by hand to get into all the nooks and crannies. Once dry I'll take some pics. :D

Here's my first lot of WIP pics:

Still need to go back over the black again to catch the missed bits.  I'm going to resist racing ahead with these before prepping the rest.  Its pay day Thursday so new brushes and paints will be got.  The aims to get the rest to the same point by then.  :D

Knackered up a few SW pads converting them into mk3 and mk6 last night. Lesson learned regarding sleep dep and doing fine detail stuff.

At least the fingers didn't get shaved!

Other than the time it takes to get the pads right I've got back into the swing of things assembling these. No more trial and error with what needs pinning and what doesn't. Those heavy weapon arms used to give me so much trouble.

From looking at what's available for the RG pad wise, it looks like I'm either going to put a blank pad on them as a temporary measure or I need to sculpt and cast some up. I'm guessing FW will eventually get around to making some funky pads so I'm leaning towards waiting and seeing.

The HQ's I stuck into dettol yesterday seem to have most of the paint already off them. Gave the jar a good shake and going to leave another day just to make it as easy as possible when it cames to the old toothbrush time.

Probably going to have to concentrate on none hobby stuff for the rest of the week with jobs needing to be tackled on the house and going back to work after the old pat leave has ended. Didn't think I'd have got anything done this last 2 weeks so I'm quite happy with my output.

Had a few mins spare earlier to be able to nip into the local model shop. Grabbed a few pots of paint to mix up something a bit more suitable to my needs. 1 pot of black mixed with 2 pots of mechanicus grey, a bit of water and plenty of mixing has given me 3 pots of a nice dark grey.

I'm tempted to mix up the really dark grey I'll need for the RG and IH highlights. Anything that will speed up the process in the long run. Tomorrow I get to order new paint brushes which is a bit exciting (did I just type that?) as I've not had new brushes in several years. Might treat myself to one of those gs tube/pipe tools as well. :)

I've got all the bits bar the shoulder pads needed to assemble the rest of the seeker and heavy squads. Now I've got the arms worked out if I get a spare few minutes I might be able to sneak in the assembly of them sooner rather than later.

Here's the models that make up my first vow:

Finally all stripped and ready to go. Hopefully I'll be able to get through these pretty fast now the cleaning has been done.

While cleaning these I've also been sorting out other models. So the next vow won't have this dead period and where things get cleaned up. ;)

The 3 grey models (2 in the top pic and 1 in the 2nd pic) are sporting the grey I've mixed up for the wolves. It's a mix of 1 pot black to 2 pots grey.

Got the cyber-familiar sorted for the Forge Lord by converting up an old warmaster great eagle rider (not sure what it was officially called).  The rider got snipped off and I gs'd the belly and back adding a bionic eye bit while I was at it:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps8fbda108.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps328ad080.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps59e6b711.jpg

I've also worked on getting some chests to match the other beakies I'll be doing in a later vow.  Currently got a few old chaos chests carved up and gs'd smooth.  Will aim to get them to match this one I've done:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps631fc5fc.jpg

Don't think it looks all that different when compared with the only example of a plastic chest that's close to the metal ones, I wanted to keep it generic rather than just SW:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps262593c2.jpg

For the Librarian (Rune Priest) I pledged a combat shield So I've finally got around to starting one.  Never GS'd a wood effect before but hopefully it looks passable:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1a9206a0.jpg

Think it looks better when it's on the model so it's got more of a sense of scale and the pattern on the shield helps as well (it's not staying that colour):

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps4519e460.jpg

Think I'm getting a little more confident with handling and sculpting with GS now.  :D

The pads for the beakies have been trimmed into mk6 and the pads for the Heavy weapons have had rims added to make them look quite close to mk3.

To have everything ready for paint I just need to sort out the Thunder Hammer head on the Forge Lord (Iron Priest) convert up a Vox for the Heavy Support Squad (Long Fangs) and assemble 2 more of the Seeker Squad (Wolf Guard)

Finally getting painting done at a reasonable speed. The heavy support squad will be finished first as the sergeant has already been finished:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps91a48832.jpg

One of the missile launcher marines is 90% done and the other 3 have been base coated grey and I've started blocking in the other bits.

I've got most of the others basecoated in grey and slowly blocking in details while waiting for washes and such to dry on the ones I'm doing a bit more detailed work on currently. Hopefully by the time the heavy support are finished the basic colours should be blocked in on the rest.

I'm loving the 2nd edition Space Wolf action and I think you hit on the right grey for 30k Wolves.  I would like to see some more highlights especially on the face of the Long Fang.  You might be able to get away with the flat grey but the face would really pop with some more highlights,

Looking forward to more.

Oof....glad I found this thread. Love how the wood looks, I need to do that for my predator conversion I'm attempting with an open top turret. Need some wooden boards in there. Keep up the good work, I love all of the old models in here.

Next time your round you can give me some tips on faces. I always end up making them look too light so was going for rugged and dirty.

Glad you think the grey is ok. I see the armour for wolves is very matt rather than say shiney EC or smurfs. :D

Cheers for the comments. Just trying to paint the wood at the moment and think if I do it again I'll make the wood grain a little more deeper than it currently is. Will see what happens when I finish painting it. :)

Well a serious lack of painting time has happened. Decided to pull a late night session to try pullin this vow back towards completion.

I've got 4 models finished just needing to base them up. The last 2 models to be built have finally been built and the rest are somewhere between undercoated and blocking in the colours. Will get pic taken tomorrow.

Think a 2nd vow is now unlikely. :(

Here's where I'm at with the first vow ...

Still a fair bit to do but now much happier I'll get them finished before the deadline.

Looking at them I've managed to get a very different looking force from my previous SW's. Much more red and silver with a single splash of yellow. I've purposefully left off the squad markings so I can do them to match whatever the books give us when they finally get around to doing 30k wolves. Though I may end up just doing different coloured runes rather than full pads of colour.

The model I'm most enjoying at the moment is the rune priest. I think he'll push me the most painting wise.

I was meant to have had a few days solid of painting but RL keeps happening. Last night I managed about 30mins at stupid o'clock in the morning. Can't keep doing that though as I'm back to full hours after paternity leave and using up lots of holidays over the last 2 months.

Was meant to take some models with me to work this morning but ran out of time. Need to make sure they're in my bag for tomorrow when I get in.

Cheers guys.

Starting to wish I'd split these up into a few vows rather than a single vow.

Lol ... I'd got it in my head I could match my previous years output, but that's just not the case.
